I would tell immediate family members. This story actually made me cry. Because when my Nana died she left me 1/2 her house and 1/2 the items in her house. She had a whole cedar chest filled with gold and silver coins. I was young and stupid and I sold them to get money to buy the other half of her house from the other person who also inherited half of her house. I also didn't take her brand new cherry cannonball bed. Boy did I make a BIG mistake, which I didn't realize until I got older. I could have left those coins to my children and grandchildren.

I would only tell a few family members and would leave town asap!

I see no reason for anyone to know about our finances regardless of rich or in poverty. My 2 older sisters? Of course as we have never discussed any of our financial situations. With that amount of money we would tell them and leave it at that.
What we would do with it? I've said her many times over than I have every material thing that I need, so I would leave it up to my wife, with discussions with me if she wished, what would be done with this amount of money.
Not sure what the poll question was exactly and this is the best I can do for ya.
Our thoughts are with you and your father during this very rough time.

Oh my, Shorty...please don't beat yourself up about that. You were seeing things from a different perspective than you are now. I can imagine myself selling coins in order to be the sole owner of my grandmother's home...because that would be the only way I could know with absolute certainty that I would be able to hang on to my grandmother's home.
It was, for the most part, a peaceful place for me. Other family members feel the same way, and we are not willing to let go of the property. (It's not "an estate"...my grandfather built it with his own two hands, with a limited amount of help from others.)
My grandmother is in a home (by her own choosing), but two of her children are paying bills to keep her in a nice place and keep her house in the family, another child is in charge of writing the checks that pay those bills, another child is in charge of upkeep on the place, and her other child does whatever else is necessary to fill in the gaps. That home is special to all of us...more special than gold coins. However, my mother has expressed doubts that we as a family will be able to hold on to the property long-term.
I'm pretty sure I would make the same choice you did. And if I have a child in the next couple years, then I would second-guess myself as you are doing...but you do what you think is best at that time.

After thinking it over, I would not tell anyone but my daughter and her family. The rest of my family and my closest friends would know something is up when I shower them with "rays of sunshine" but I wouldn't tell them.
At least that's what I say now

Sorry, it was reference to finding "your nuts" in the yard instead of coins. it's a pirate treasure.
