There are people out there who are not on the internet and who do not have access to online banking. They still have banking needs. Yes,it is the 21st Century but let's not assume everyone is equipped with the same abilities and devices.

First of all most people are not back 5 days a week and then there are not enough people to begin with. Thus the need for an appointment. They don't want to or need to staff fully as in the olden days for the few people that do walk in and ask for things they can easily do online themselves. They are maximizing people, space and effort and most importantly costs. Most banking can be done online. Why on earth would you sit in line to deposit a check? I know there are some people who just can't or won't but come on. This is the 21st century and like it or not it's only going to get more prevelant so you might as well get used to it. And yes it is safe, secure and accurate. So they want you to use it.
@Meowingkitty - this might upset you, based on your post, but if I have a check to deposit, I go to the bank and deposit it. If I have one to cash, yes, cash, I go to the bank and cash it. I usually just go inside because at my bank, you have to be a contortionist to reach the tube thing in the drive thru. Besides, getting out of the car and walking in is good for me.My bank rarely has any lines. I just go in l do what I need to and leave.
While I have online access to my account and check it regularly and transfer funds between checking and savings, I refuse to deposit a check by mobile banking through an app. Just not my thing.
We still go inside too.
We will not deposit a check using a mobile app, we do not use our phones for for any kind of mobile app stuff.
We do not have debit cards, so how how else would we get cash.
Just today we had $160 in wrapped coins, can't put those in the drive thru drawer or tube.

I'm picking up a check from a consignment store tomorrow morning. Then I'll take it to my bank to cash it. Real cash. To put in my wallet. Fun money.
In late December I bought a new house. Had to move some funds around from a few different banks to my main bank. All 3 banks told me to go in person to the banks and initiate the wire transfers to my main bank in person. To absolutely not, under no circumstances, initiate the wires online.
Then my banker told me that when I wired the funds to my account NOT to check online to see if the funds were there. To come in and they would check for me in their system. They also advised me that during the few days the funds were in my bank before I wired them out to the closing attorney to not check my account online from home at all. Just let everything sit still.
When I went to wire the funds to the closing attorney, I once again went in person to my bank and initiated the wire there.
When I closed on our old house in February, I went to the bank in person to make sure I received the wire transfer from the closing. Then the bank transferred the funds into savings for me, per their advice.
I also have a safe deposit box at my bank. Many reasons to go to the bank.
Go in person. Do as much as you can online or through an app. It doesn't matter. Do what you want. I don't consider it lagging behind if you go in person or some badge of honor if you do everything online or by app. I don't feel I'm going to be left behind at all. If it all changes down the road, I'll make the change then. It is really no big deal. I haven't used my debit card in years and haven't missed it at all. Going old school by choice doesn't necessarily mean you are going to be left behind or not able to adapt.

IF that is their plan, how will we get coins and bill change, cash large checks, discuss issues we are having with accounts, close accounts, and more?

I'm still in an area of small to smallish towns. I have ignored the push for strictly online banking and/or banking apps. Paper is it for me, and lobby banking with tellers. If and when they refuse that, I will have to go commando.

In Philadelphia the entire ATM machine is being taken. Several friends and other people told me they would drive to their bank for money and instead of an ATM machine there were big slabs of plywood.

@BlueFinch It's amazing to me how many people never go into a bank at all.
Ever since Covid, I don't go as much as I used to, but I do go every now and then.
I know saying this I'm going to hear "ya ya"
but I'm convinced on of the major problems with what going on inthis country today is because people don't get out much anymore.
My daughters do everything on line. They shop on line or one daughter's husband shops.
Everything is delivered. They don't see the long lines at bands of people where only Spanish is being spoken.
They aren't in grocery stores walking around seeing so many empty shelves. The signs up everywhere saying, "Help Wanted".
So many people never leave their cars. The lines to drive up and pick up medicine are huge. I can go in pick up the medicine. By the time I'm back to my car, the line has moved maybe 2 cars.
I enjoyed reading the OP. It's nice there are still people like me who still interact with humans.
I know what she's talking about. Last Summer I wanted to close out an account at a bank.
Three times (various times) I went into the bank to close the account. I thought it should be quick.
Every time there were always people 'in line' to see the one banker.
Finally I told my daughter about my frustration.
She said, "Mom, you can just do it on line."
Well she was finally able to lose down the account. However, it wasn't as quick as she thought. SHE ended up trying to do it several times. She finally did.
So, to the OP, I feel your pain and frustration.
But I think we are a dying breed. My friend actually gets the bills and writes and mails out the checks every months.
I let my daughter do automatic withdrawal for me. I still get some of the bills mailed to me but it shows already paid.
I'm still arguing with my electric company. For a month my electric bill was a few dollars short of $900. I always check the bills this would have slipped by if I hadn't checked it. It's an all electric house.
I'll never have an electric car.

One of banks is still full service, but my other bank is awful now. I mean, if you don't do anything but use ATM and deposit automatically, it is perfect. But CS is slim. They are nice though. Omg, they brought in this brain of a money machine that does everything. Took me 10 minutes and clerk helped me. Lol. That is inside of the bank. Took the place of most of the tellers. There is only one person in bank at a time to help. But sometimes I think people don't really bank like they used to, so there isn't a need. Sign of the times, and technology
