Well for regulation time that is the way it works. They have changed how it works in overtime. A team cannot just score a field goal. They have to score a touchdown OR the other team has to have had the opportunity to have possession of the ball.

Not NFL but ask University of Alabama's Coach Nick Saban about missed field goals. Smiley Happy

My understanding of overtime rules is the team that possesses the ball first must score a touchdown on its initial possession to win. If that doesn't happen, the team to score first, either by touchdown, field goal, or safety, wins.

Yes, but you said it better. Before, the first team could quickly score just a field goal and it was over. So now, they both get an opportunity to have possession of the ball unless the first one scores a touchdown.

Ah, okay. I thought that perhaps the rules had changed once again.

MomOf4,

I turned it when the score was 31-10 then changed back toward the end and WOW, they really deserved that wild card win! {#emotions_dlg.thumbup1}

I'm not much of a football fan either. I once dated a pro player and up close it is brutal and nasty.

But I kept turning to the Indy/KC game yesterday...it was fantastic drama, right until the end.

But Super Bowls are generally pretty boring...although I do like the snacks!

I heard a sportscaster comment, where football was once a game of defense, it is now all about offense.

I am a fan of football; I prefer it over any other team spectator sport. Being the place kicker on a team is said to be the loneliest position. How difficult is it to kick a close range field goal? Very, especially when a miss means the end to a team's season.

How hard is it to kick a field goal, up close, with only a few seconds left? Ask tony romo of Dallas. A few years ago in Seattle they had that opportunity, which would have won the game, and the snap went south, and they couldn't even get the ball in place to kick it. Lol. This video is played over and over again on sports channels to show that anything can happen at any time.

Not a football fan although I do enjoy baseball. Went to a Bears game a few years back and had excellent seats. Luckily, it was a very nice day for November in Chicago. Had on a sweater and did not even need a jacket but how often does that happen? Anyway, I just remember thinking if I can get out of here without somebody throwing up on me, I'll be happy. I have seen people who have had a few too many at a baseball game but nothing like at a football game.

ETA: Hubby is a Packers fan and if he had been able to get tix to the game, he'd be there, which is just insane in this weather. Luckily, he has taken to going to a sports bar for the regular season games and that is just fine by me.

Not a fan, hate that game.
