What has not been addressed in this thread is the large number of elderly poor in our country. So many have worked long and hard throughout their lives but find themselves poor in their old age. I suppose there may be some here who would find them at fault for their circumstances. I do not. And not everyone is fortunate to enough to be offered financial assistance by relatives. Of course, I was brought up by parents who instilled "There but for the grace of do, go I" in their children. Yes, there will always be those who cheat and abuse anything, but think twice about lumping everyone in the box you see in your tiny corner of the world.

Hunger is a motivator for children. Ugh.
Hunger was a motivator for the children of generations before the welfare programs we know today. One can hear and read countless stories about those who did without as children having the drive to succeed and not face that again in their lives.
And I think with all the feeding programs we have today, few children face that same kind and depth of hunger that those previous generations did. We have come far in that area, and while not perfect, no child today should be hungry.

It's about time some government handouts were cut. The only surprise is it happening now. I expect a lot more to be cut in the near future!!! It better be!

The poor and lower middle class elderly are the real victims in this whole debate.
The children are vastly covered and cared for ( although there are always those that fall through the cracks) with countless programs, but the elderly are forgotten and denied.

DeBlasio help families of the police?????

Unfortunately, unless cuts are made for everyone except the disabled and elderly the affect will be more children born for no other reason than to qualify for assistance. It's no different from those who travel from other countries to give birth in our country. I don't mean only poor people or illegals.
It's not fair to the child who is used to qualify or to those paying taxes that they should be allowed to save for their retirement.

Hunger is still an issue among the poor, the working work and in many military families.
