Last time I ordered flowers I went to the local florists website and saw some autumnal arrangements.  This particular florist is connected with Teleflora.  A couple of us at work were going in on the arrangement for a sick co-worker - we didn't want to focus on illness.

So I called the florist about the arrangement and was told they didn't have the flowers for that arrangement but would make substitutions.

I said, does Teleflora come in at night and update your website without you knowing about it?  Guy didn't know what to say.

So we picked a beautiful victorian teacup and saucer arrangement.  I know squat about flowers but love the internet because I was reciting every flower in the arrangement's description to make the purchase.

I finally said, sir, this arrangement is going to someone that I will be visiting (bluff).  This means I will see what you deliver.  I also know where you are and am placing the order by phone because I am lazy.  I work downtown and you work downtown.

If our friend's floral arrangement does not arrive as pictured I will be visiting you and making your head hurt.

I'm surprised the florist didn't say he was sorry but he could not fill your order.

You'd make his head hurt?

@abbeythe 8th

When I said it, he understood that I would come in complaining aka giving him a headache.

I will only order from local florists, as I have seen so many people disappointed by going online or the 800 choices.

I like to support local business whenever I can, and we still have a number of local florists in our area that do a really nice job.

I have always wanted a nice fresh pine and candle with a hurricane in the middle kind of centerpiece for my dining table during the season, but have never done it because it just seems I don't have the money during December. One of these years, though, I'm going in and get one!

I remember walking into work after Thanksgiving and I could smell the pine....WE would get a semi load of boxes of it and all the other christmas greens.

@Mominohio:

Cheapest way to have your centerpiece: check out a thrift store for the glass cylinder or hurricane---they may also have a selection of candles.  For the pine boughs, clip some from your tree or a forest.  Or, find plastic ones after the holidays and just spray them with scent next year.  Add some Christmas balls, bells, holly picks, oranges, etc.

Should make a reusable, seasonal centerpiece for a few pennies.

Seems like the only work florists would get these days are weddings, funerals, corporate work, and tele-orders.  And they aren't usually very good at tele-orders, especially if the order is long-distance.  I wouldn't be surprised if their numbers are dwindling.

Just saw a floral commercial...'Telefloral', if I remember correctly.

Made me think, where are all the floral commercials this year?

Years past, it seemed Jim McCann & 1800-FLOWERS was encroaching our TV time several times an hour.   Today...nothing.

Is the floral industry on the downslide?

I think there have been instances where the flowers ordered in this manner didn't arrive looking like the ones in the photos. 1800 trouble. Cat Surprised

That happened to my daughter.  In grad school, she saved her money and sent flowers to DH and I for our anniversary.  It was more then $50 at the time, a lot for a student.

They arrived looking nothing like the photo image of what she had ordered, and most were dead.  I took photos the day we received the flowers and wrote a letter of complaint.

She got her $50 back and I threw out the dead mess.

We now order from a well known local man who does flower arrangements.
