My 86 year old neighbor use to walk her (late) dog, a corgi, every morning at 5AM on city streets.

I think she is so active (she still works at her florist shop 6 days a week) because she is strong and fearless.

You just have to.use common sense.

Obviously something bothers the o/p about this trail she's talking about. So just don't go there. Pick a different route where you are more comfortable.

Never forget that 'two perpetrators' can overtake anyone. Even one, who has some type of chemical (forgot the name) on a hanky can attack from behind, and quickly make a person unconscious. I still say, that if our intuition is warning us, could be that we are 'feeling' that something/someone isn't quite 'right' in that particular area. I wouldn't walk there alone.

You realize, of course, that crime is lower than it has been in decades. You are feeding into fear from our media. Very sad that fear prevents you from living a full life.

What I don't get are the posts that seem critical towards the OP for being afraid. I just spoke to someone yesterday who had been raped while on a walk, and it was in a secluded area. It made me think of this thread so I decided to look at it again. If the OP's gut feeling is telling her something isn't right or safe, she should listen to it, IMO. It's not being paranoid, it's a fact of life.

If the "media" is reporting that crime is "lower than it has been in decades", how is she or anyone else "feeding into the fear from our media"??? And, speaking for myself, "fear" is not preventing me from living a full life". I do not live in fear, BUT I use common sense in every situation, whether I am out and about or at home. For instance, I had someone come to my front door one evening saying their car had broken down (me and my husband were both home) and asked if she could use our phone. We had sliding glass doors so I could see and talk to her thru them. I would not let her in but told her that I would call someone for her.

It is sad that this world is not the safe place it was 50 years ago but, the sad truth is that terrible things happen everyday to people and it is foolish not to take precautions.

Very well said. I remember when I was in high school, once or twice people knocked on our door and asked to use our phone because their car had broken down. We never thought anything of it. Now there's no way that I would let anyone do that, no matter how nice or 'normal' they would seem to be.

The fact that crime is down doesn't mean crime no longer exists.

No intelligent woman leads a full life because of that. Do you walk down the streets of the worst areas, alone, at night? No, none of us do.

Taking intelligent precautions is not something to be ashamed of.
