Has anybody read the Gift of Fear by Gavin de Becker? It is an eye-opener. Check it out on Amazon!

Fortune, you took the words right out of my mouth!

OP (and everyone else) Plz get a copy of this book. It will help you immensely and make you realize that your fear/ intuition is a good thing. And show how we, as women, unknowingly put ourselves at risk everyday. Very eye opening!

I feel so strongly about this book that I sent copies to both our daughters!

I have had the book in my wishlist for several years every since I saw him on Oprah. Thanks for the reminder.

The fact that you need to carry pepper spray indicates how uncomfortable you are......find another place to walk....... so you can enjoy time with your little buddy and not have to worry!

The responses on this thread have been very helpful and eye opening to me and hopefully others. Thanks so much for your contribution. I plan to be proactive, listen to my instincts, and at the same time try to not live in a state of fear all the time.

I pack a gun. I have a permit and I know how to use one and yes I could if I needed to.

Re: Feeling unsafe when on walks

You are right to be concerned. Lots of evil in this world. Glad you have pepper spray. I personally would never walk by myself through a wooded area like that, with or without a dog.

I grew up in the city, and never take my safety for granted. Ever. My doors are always locked...always stay very aware of my surroundings when I'm out. It only takes one freak to hurt you or your kids.

Please stay safe!

Unfortunately it is not a good idea to just relax enjoy your walk. There have been and still are hundreds of warnings about walking alone (especially women) I don't care if you have a dog and pepper spray, you can still be overtaken by someone bigger and stronger than you are. It is best to buddy up and keep a sharp lookout, after all, it is your life we are talking about.

Re: Feeling unsafe when on walks

I thought of this thread today when my car broke down. It was a dead battery but in the parking lot of a grocery store. I walked 1 mile in 114 degree heat to get home. I emptied out my handbag first (a florentine dooney) and placed it in the trunk and put my money and id in my pockets and cell phone in my back pocket. All I was carrying was water. I was wearing cutoffs and a tank but my sunscreen had already worn off as it was now 5pm. At least there was shade on one side of the street and that's where I walked.

Got home safely but programmed my phone with my car insurance information as I have road side assistance.

When my dh got home from work we went and picked up a replacement battery...but first stopped at my car to pull out the dead one to turn in.

First of all, you are not being paranoid or weird..you are being realistic- I have ajob which requires me to get into trucks with stangers and drive alone with them, sometimes at night..Any thinking person would know that this is (potentially)dangerous, yet its only been in the past few years that I began to carry pepper spray on my keychain!

I DO know that the more worried you get (in your own head) the LESS enjoyable thes walks will be, until you stop altogether- so try and put your fear in a "box" in your head and try not to open it every time you walk-

You already have a dog, which potential bad guys do not know is friendly even if you DO...you are cautious, but maybe carrying pepper spray might make you feel safer like it does for me- Mine is small and i dont even have to remove it from its "holster" to use it..

Just a thought...

What in the world do you do? I hate to tell you what I was thinking when I read that. LOL

LOL! I sell commercial trucks.like utility trucks, cargo vans plumbers trucks,etc....

Oh GOOD! LOL Thank you.
