If I never have to fly again, it will be fine.
My sister just returned from overseas from visiting her daughter and my husband and I picked her up at JFK. I realized I likely will never make an overseas trip and feel somewhat embarrassed by it.
This was not always so. When I was young, it was a real adventure and I even took ground school. I never got my license because I could not navigate and fly without getting airsick.
Guess those fearless, carefree days are gone.
I'm glad I don't. I've gone on some great vacations to Europe that wouldn't have happened without a plane ride. Most fears (flying, snakes, heights, etc.) are irrational and can be conquered if you want.

Although I am not afraid of flying, my husband is. Nothing I can do about it. It's become a problem were we end up drive long trips because of this. I took my trip to Italy with my sister because of this. I've given up!

What are you afraid of? The worse thing that could happen is you die. Test San happen anywhere. I'd rather go while having an adventure!
And flying is sure safer than my drive to work -

I would never ever fly these days, only in emergency....I am not missing anything, I can get in a car and drive and am much happier doing this. I never feel anything but joy at not being crammed in some tiny piece of metal that depends on little tine parts keeping hundreds of folks up in the air!!...Glad some like it, they can have my seat...![]()

Witchy, I read your post twice and am a little fuzzy on what causes the fear ...... the actual boarding of the plane, or being up in the air ..... or what? Did it come on suddenly, or was it the result of a bad flight (turbulence)?
Well, if you don't have to leave the country, I guess you can always drive or take a train.
I do not like the sensation of being in the air, being in the plane, feeling it move up and down. Turbulence is frightening although, having learned how to fly in a light plane, I understand how flight works and I understand turbulence.
However, that doesn't make it any easier. I imagine falling, imagine the horror I would endure knowing the plane would crash. I worry about who would care for my cats (although I have that spelled out in my will.)
In short, I guess I simply don't want to die by falling through the air.
Yes, I get that it is frequently an irrational fear, but that doesn't make it any less real to me. The takeoff and landing are extremely tough for me. The feeling of hurtling down the runway, the liftoff and then that floating sensation, where the engines are straining and loud. Yea, all that makes me white knuckle it.
I've had bad flights, but I'm sure not the worst. The oxygen masks have never dropped out! I think mostly their were many years I didn't fly, then had a few rough flights, and before I realized, I was terrified of flying.
I know there are drugs, etc. to get past it, so if I HAVE to go, I will. Strangely, I've been up in helicopters and loved it! They just lift off and go...no long takeoff.

I am a private pilot and will assure you that flying is safer than driving 2 blocks from your home. If I remember correctly, most accidents happen within a few miles from home (but don't quote me on that). Read the statistics on line and you will not find one article that will not assure you that you are much safer in the air versus on the highway. With this said, may we all stay safe in 2016. BTW, most airlines have a simulator program to assist people that have a fear of air travel. If you travel often, it may be worth checking into if any of these programs are offered in your area.

I don't fly anymore, not because of fear, but because it's a MAJOR hassle, starting at the airport. Planes are too crowded, seats are uncomfortable, screaming babies, rude passengers. I've flown A LOT in the past when flying was a pleasant experience.

I stopped flying due to having to wait in lines or whatnot in airports for hours. My back cant take it. I am not afraid to fly and used to fly all the time. To me the pilot is experienced and I trust the pilot more than people on the roads. My DH will never fly anyway, his best friend from highschool and his wife were killed in a crash in NY. Since then DH said he will never get in a plane.

Ok, I always hear this...that flying is safer than driving. But, don't I have a much better chance of surviving a car crash than an airplane crash!?
