Favorite elementary school memory

Mine was having the enormous pleasure of a visit from the oft controversial but powerhouse Casious Clay
(The famed fighter Ali, not sure I spelled his name right) come to our school on a horse drawn carriage.

His trainer lived next to Stafford Elementary school in Cherry Hill, NJ.
The trainer kept horses on his property.

Ali would come and see all the children during lunch recess.
I recall 3 visits in the very early 70s.

He’d always give carriage rides to the children in our Special Ed division.
He’d take 5 or 6 kids all around the school grounds.

It’s a memory I will never ever forget.
One that showed me the true nature of this sensitive and kind man.

Ko !

That is a wonderful memory!!!

My family moved whe I was in  fifth grade which was traumatic having to leave my friends behind.  I was still in the same city only but on the opposite side which was far enough.  I felt so alone and unsure of what to expect when I went to my new grammar school.

Within a few weeks I had made quite a few friends, boys and girls.  They took me under their wing and I became part of their group.  We stayed friends throughout grammar school and into high school.

I have been retired for a few years and still have those friendships.  We have been friends for 63 years and we still have so much fun and share stories and memories.  Meeting these people was the most memorable grammar school experience and still bonding with them a blessing!!!!!

Ko - keep telling that story. It's a wonderful tribute to a man who was more generous than we all know.

First grade teacher - Mrs. B. She was so pretty and kind. I skipped Kindergarten and was young and anxious. Cried a lot. Mrs. B was so sweet and reasurring. After Christmas break, her husband transferred to military base in Alaska and I missed her like crazy. Right before she left she suggested I be moved to a more challenging class. She hugged me and said, "I believe  in your potential." I had no idea what potential meant, but loved her for saying that.

Re: Favorite elementary school memory

I have so many.

I don't know why but they always brought us to New York a lot on class trips.

I loved going to NYC being in the tunnel lol

It doesn't take much for me to be happy.

Another one is a man came and built a giant ice sculpture in the lunch room.

It took up 2 long lunch tables.

I was hypnotized.

Alot of the kids were bored.

More but I am blanking out now.

Class trips around 3-4 times a year.  So fun.

We'd jump on one of those yellow school buses that didn't seem to have shock absorbers and sounded like a Mack truck on its last legs even though they were only a few years old.  Their engines always sounded like they were pulling 40 elephants up hill and the drivers never did master using a stick shift.

Those who ran the fastest to the bus got the window seats.  But, everyone was well behaved unlike today.  We didn't know many, but on long trips, sometimes we sang patriotic songs we had learned in class.

We went to NYC several times, historical areas of Philadelphia, Independence Hall, Liberty Bell, Gettysburg Battlefield, Valley Forge, Amish farms, old house tours of notable historical figures, farms, museums, old churches, one room school houses.

We also went to places that demonstrated how old tools and furniture were made.  Some remind me of a small version of Williamsburg.

I remember one house where the owners slept on flat pieces of wood...no mattress.  Can't remember the name.

Since then, I have revisited some of those places and of course, appreciated them much more than when I was young.

Second grade.    Teacher said she was going to read a story and she wanted NO interruptions.  None at all for any reason.

I raised my hand 3 times to tell her I felt sick.   She scolded me for not following her instructions.

The 4th time I puked all over my desk and floor.   A lot!!!!!

@MoonieBaby   My family moved to Cherry Hill, NJ in 1965 and in the early 1970s I can remember driving past Muhammad Ali's house.  It was kind of exciting then!  I think he only lived there for a few years.

As far as fond elementary school memories, I went to PS 152 in Brooklyn and we went on school trips...one was to Rockefeller Center and we saw some studios which I thought was very interesting...also did a school trip around Manhattan on a Circle Line Tour.

Me either. I just remember the feeling of not fitting in.
