My ma bought me "Story Book Dolls".....but, unfortunately, they were in framed glass cases and hung on the walls.   They were NOT to play with.

So....I would do something MORE INTERESTING like take all the doorknobs in the house off with my handy screwdriver and pliers.    Or, if the weather was good, I would dig deep holes in the yard, because I "heard" that China was on the opposite side of the world.....

What a great post as it brings up wonderful memories.  I had a Pebbles doll, Tiny Tears,  Thumbelina, Crissy, Charmin Chatty, Posie Pixie and Tammy doll.  Not to mention various Barbies and her friends.  👶

I think my first doll was a Chatty Cathy but I was obsessed with my Barbies.....along with all the clothes, houses, cars, & misc other stuff I had.

My favorite was my Barbie doll that I got in 1959 when it first came out.   I still have her in the original box and the price tag says $2.99!  I had so many outfits and my mom made a lot of clothes for her.  I also still have the fold up Barbie doll house.  Just can't part with these items.  Other favorites were a large bride doll and a mother and daughter doll set.  They wore matching pink dresses and when you turned on a switch they walked (actually just shuffled a bit). I loved playing with my dolls, even the paper dolls.  Such happy memories.

My Kewpie doll was my favorite, followed by Tiny Tears. When I got married at a too-early age of 20, I thought I'd outgrown them and gave them all up. Now, 50 years later, I know I hadn't outgrown them Smiley Happy

The one whose string you pulled and she talked. Another whose hair you pulled and it grew. Barbie and Ken dolls galore. Loved dressing them.

@AuntG    Was that the Chatty Kathy doll? I think it was Crissy that had the string and her hair grew.  I had both dolls.

 I also loved Thumbelina (spelling). She would move and twist like a real baby!

@Enufstuff

same here, had the exact doll.  We loved going to Woolworths or McCrory's to buy the paper dolls.

Re: Favorite dolls

[ Edited ]

We had a couple of Madam Alexander dolls but they were mainly to look at.  Also had several "story book" dolls which we always kept in their boxes. But we also had assorted other dolls that we actually played with. I don't recall the specifics.  Always did like dolls.  I now have several Marie Osmond dolls that are on my etegere.  I forgot to add that I have Raggedy Ann and Andy sitting on a chair in my bedroom. Got them from a crafter at a craft fair several years ago.

Also, I don't know if anyone remembers Doll Hospitals?  Back then, if you had a doll needing repair, you would drop it off and they would call you when it was fixed.  My Tiny Tears doll had its arm pulled out of its socket, probably by me or a sibling, and we took it there and it was good as new.  The doll was made by Ideal and was worth repairing.

Unlike some things made today, where you just toss it when it breaks, most items were of high quality.  Not to mention the sentimental value of my baby doll.  💕🏥🏨
