We are headed into a new dynamic in the job market. What has been the standard for jobs and job placement is changing quickly and drastically.

If someone can afford the luxury of attending college, they should by all means attend. But for the individual who is going deep into debt they will spend much of their life repaying, it may not be a wise investment. Some jobs are going to vanish seemingly overnight. The actors are striking because they can be replaced by AI. The future is very uncertain for any and every career. An outpost is going to be built on the moon using 3-D printing. What is happening in the very near future is mind-boggling.

I just hope young people today can adapt quickly to the changing world and make choices that are right for them not their predecessors.

@On It.  You do know, I hope, that here in New Mexico (your adopted state), all high school grads can go to state universities free thanks to lottery scholarships?

Yes, things are achanging and at warp speed.

The prices at McDonald's have steadily gone up in the last year. A year ago I could get a large size soda drink or coffee, ice tea for 1.00 plus tax now it's 1.49 plus tax for any size.

And don't forget that many are getting college free for them, but it's on us.

That's going on big time in NJ.

On April 1, fast food workers in California will have one of the highest minimum wages in the country at $20 an hour. That's nearly 30 percent higher than the current state minimum wage of $15.50.

I was born in CA and rember when the wage was $3.30 Smiley Surprised

Times have really changed

People need a livable wage. Years ago I read a book about trying to live on minimum wage. The journalist couldn't. "Nickled and Dimed" was the book's title. Good read...

These jobs were never meant to support people.

They are meant for filler jobs...students, Part timers, 2nd jobs etc.

This will price out the already too high costs of a fast food lunch.  They will move the added wage costs onto the customers.

See how many of these people will be Out of a job then.

And yes, many places are already automated.

You use the kiosk, place your own order and only kitchen staff is needed.

You get discounts etc for using apps....you pay on your phone....you just grab your bag etc etc.

Less staff needed.

@Ronettes.  In NM the scholarships are paid for by people playing the lottery, it's not tax money.

A friend of ours sent her son to Rutgers, an expensive college, for four years.

She and her husband almost lost their house paying the bills for that school, her job went to 4 day work weeks and his business was slow.

Somehow they made it through by scrimping, and when the son graduated they found out how many were attending that college free, they hit the roof!

Enough said on that.

Prices are skyrocketing on everything.  I'm not down on fast food workers getting $20, but I'm also not paying close to $25 for two McDonalds combos.  I heard this summer an Ohio water park was paying lifeguards $22 an hour AND providing a place to live and meals.  Now that should have been easy money for college students.  Without rent or food costs that should have been some decent cash.

I will say we have eaten out MUCH less in the past six months.  I really don't want to pay $50 + tip for a meal at someplace like Applebees or a place like that.  Local bar, wings were "market". Price.  What?  They were $27 for a dozen.  No thanks.  If the food was great, I wouldn't mind.  Most times, it's mediocre at best.

California is doing youth a huge disfavor.

Well I guess they think it absolves them of any responsiibility to improve the education provided by the public schools - although they will still want more money for that as well.

If I had young children, they would not be attending public school -

The other day I saw a video of a teenager in class throwing a chair at the teacher, which knocked her out.

No thanks.

@Kachina624

We've encouraged young people telling them you can do what you love and live like a celebrity, but that just doesn't work out for most of us.

They wind up living a disappointed life, seeing themselves as victims of not having what they are entitled to have, and being angry and disillusioned.  They don't learn to live within their means or to deal with disappointment and go on with life.   It is sad for them.

@Sooner

Huh?   I don't know who you're referring to, but I don't know ANY parents who've told their kids "they can live like a celebrity".

No one I know does this.
