It is a FACT that the higher level of education you have, the higher your earning power is and the lower your chances of long term unemployment.
It is quaint to think all you need is some gumption and smarts, but the degree is the entree into higher paying jobs. Whether that's good or bad is irrelevent. It just is.

Very good! That sounds about right. $21 and change would be the base if wages had kept up with productivity/inflation. McDonalds along with other fast food chains can absorb the raises if they wanted to. McDonalds alone made over $3 billion in profits. Don"t chastise the workers for making a decent wage. They are not the ones you should be angry with.

@Kachina624 If they stay in those jobs when they are capable of mastering either training or higher education that would be sad.
I am not worried that's going to happen. Capable youth are unlikely to be satisfied with the life even that wage can give them where it's being offered. I know there are still places they might live okay on that, but unless someone else is providing housing, a young person without accumulated assets isn't going to find life easy in LA. The sooner they know that, the sooner they'll be looking for the road out. Hopefully they will find someone offering them a better carrot or else a push ahead.

@Desert Lily wrote:Thank goodness they're getting a raise. Housing costs and rentals have skyrocketed in CA. I seriously doubt that anyone making $20/hour in CA could afford a decent apartment or afford a house. I read that homelessness has increased there.
Here in NJ $20 an hour buys you guaranteed poverty -
Our rents are $2,000 - $3,000 Plus utilities, cable, car insurance, phones, and groceries are just through the roof.
We're escaping and moving down South, where it is Less People and more livable, country style life with TREES and a back garden!

On April 1, fast food workers in California will have one of the highest minimum wages in the country at $20 an hour. That's nearly 30 percent higher than the current state minimum wage of $15.50.
I was born in CA and rember when the wage was $3.30
Times have really changed
People need a livable wage. Years ago I read a book about trying to live on minimum wage. The journalist couldn't. "Nickled and Dimed" was the book's title. Good read...
@Trinity11. That's exactly why they shouldn't be lured into lifetime fast food jobs but should be acquiring skills for better jobs with a future, career opportunities.

We are headed into a new dynamic in the job market. What has been the standard for jobs and job placement is changing quickly and drastically.
If someone can afford the luxury of attending college, they should by all means attend. But for the individual who is going deep into debt they will spend much of their life repaying, it may not be a wise investment. Some jobs are going to vanish seemingly overnight. The actors are striking because they can be replaced by AI. The future is very uncertain for any and every career. An outpost is going to be built on the moon using 3-D printing. What is happening in the very near future is mind-boggling.
I just hope young people today can adapt quickly to the changing world and make choices that are right for them not their predecessors.

In his Junior and Senior year my son worked at Ben and Jerry's. He carried AP courses for college credit and managed to go to college with a free ride. NYU Law followed. He wanted to make some part time $$$ and refused an allowance from us. He also tutored. My daughter started her own healthcare company and sold it. She worked in Dunkin Donuts through college. Both are self starters but worked in fast food establishments.
Those jobs are usually part time for supplemental income.

I think everyone's forgetting that when the minimum wage increases, so do the prices -
A Quarter Pounder is already $8 (used to be $5), if the salary climbs then soon that Quarter Pounder will be $15.
Someone has to pay those salaries.

I don't get into other people's pockets. Make as much money as you can , it is none of my business what job you have or if you stay there.

I'm sure it may be different in other parts of the country, but here I see many workers in their 70's and even some in their 80's. I understand some may not have plannned ahead or managed their finances very well, but I also know that is not always the case. Inflation needs to be dealt with and soon.
