I know the names of several QBB posters because of personal information they posted here and then on a public FB page. Or they've given enough information to put two and two together.
While I realize that Facebook is more social/casual/available, the site that really bothers me is Ancestry.
Anyone related to you can post your full name, birth date, mother's maiden name, and whatever else they can come up with about you.
Data mining for targeted advertising or for political purposes can be very annoying, but in my opinion, the genealogical sites could be real gold mines for serious hackers with criminal intent.

You can make your account private on Ancestry.

Yes, I know you can make your account private, but any real hacker can easily access private sites if they are serious about it, as evidenced by all the financial institutions that have been hacked over the years.
I am sensitive to this because I have a family member who compiled an extensive family tree with all sorts of personal information (without my consent). Whenever anyone in our large extended family (even distant family we have never met) asks her to allow them access to her account, she allows it; they can then show it to anyone they want.
I consider it the equivalent of a venereal disease-- when you send the information to someone, you are potentially sending it to everyone with whom they have contact.

Totally agree, there is a movie called The Circle that basically explains the hypocrisy of those who only care for their privacy but encourage their customers to be open.
The fact that one does have anything “hide” is totally compatible with our right to control access to our personal information🌻

I just downloaded my FB archive a few mins ago, and I have nothing to worry about.
I never played games on there or did ANYTHING that warned me FB could access my info. They ALWAYS warn you first --- that if you proceed, FB will have access to your contacts, friends list, blah blah blah....I just never did it and I don't use my real name so there is nothing to be concerned about.....I always kept all my stuff "private."
Glad now I did.
I've seen people complaining about being put in FB "jail," and so forth, but they have a public page. Keep it private and that won't happen.

There is certainly a lot more to fear from shopping online - even if you use paypal - than from information I have put on FB. A while back QVC accidently leaked out a bunch of people's e mail addys on this site.
