I know several people who would never have a FB page or post here, yet belong to four or five dating sites.

You don't give your name. POF picture profile is optional.

You don't NEED Facebook, but it makes things much easier for me.

I use Facebook to follow my friends, message friends, and stay involved in local activism groups. My book club uses it to keep in touch and uses the Events function to plan our meetings. I use Events to stay engaged in activism is my area and Messenger to plan meetings with friends. I also use it to follow the local news station, which I have set to send me notifications whenever they post something. (That's optional and I usually only use it for friends.) Because I have it set to notify me, I get breaking local news, national news items they post and, more importantly, traffic and weather updates when things are bad.

Facebook also allows me to stay engaged with my friends and family who live in different states. I know my friends in Seattle ran a St. Patrick's Day marathon this past weekend and when they came into town for a marathon here, Messenger made it easy for us to stay in touch and plan.

I have two local married friends who have eschewed Facebook as something they don't want or need and they don't text, either. They reach out to me through email only. I see them FAR less often than I see my friends who are on Facebook because I have no idea what they're up to and it's not as easy to make plans. They don't like to call OR text and usually only communicate with me via email. It takes 4 days to plan something because we're literally waiting for emails to get sent, read, and replies to be written and sent. That's usually reduced to minutes or hours with friends who text or use Facebook.

I don't get that, @ChynnaBlue.  Isn't it just as easy to check your email frequently as it is to check on FB?  I'm not being snarky.

Re: Facebook? Do I Need It?

[ Edited ]

Even if I checked my email often, they can't check their email while at work and only email at night, so that doesn't help.

I rarely use my personal email anymore. It's full of junk mail and my Facebook feed, Texts and Messenger are not. There are only three REAL people who use my personal email to contact me - my mom and the couple I mentioned. Most days I don't even check it. I have those three people set as VIPS so I can check to see if I got an email from any of them and that's pretty much it. The rest is junk and my emailed sales confirmations that I really only use if something goes wrong.

Email has largely been replaced by texts and other services, including Facebook. It's far less efficient.

I have friends that live overseas and they post on fb so I enjoy reading about what they are doing. I also like the cute animal stories from various animal support groups. If there are political posts or posts that I know I won't appreciate I ignore them. Rarely do I use the "Hide Post" feature. Overall I like fb. I get out of it what I want and discard the rest.

I have a friend who is so into FB that she puts most everything on it. She recently found out one of her "friends" is living with a guy on the sexual predator list in the state. This creep uses her friends computer so he has had access to ALL the cute kiddie pics that my friend (and ALL her friends) post. Remember this when you post and THINK it is private and personal. NOT!

I use FB but I never put anything "personal" on there. Believe it or not, some people don't use FB for that.

I use it to socialize with people I have known for years, as well as new friends, but most of the time, I use it to talk about dogs, crocheting (there are lots of crochet groups on FB), and other hobbies or interests.

Not everyone on FB uses it to broadcast their personal lives and what they had for breakfast. LOL

I don't play any games and I don't use any "apps," because those are data mining. Of course, I don't use my real name anyway ~ or my real location ~ so it's all good........

@YorkieonmyPillow**********You opened a whole new facet!  Thanks!

@Moonchilde Hi Moonchilde, The profs that gave my son's class were from the business dept. of his college. Apparently, they were concerned not so much with the students but rather what others posted on their Facebook page. I should have clarified my first response. Also, military members have to be careful as well since the old "drunken pledge brother " may surface on his page. This I know first hand as well.

Hope that helps.

The *reasons* don't make any difference. No one "has" to see anything at all on a job applicant's or employee's FB page. Just make it private and/or say no, I don't have one, or none of your business/I question the legality of your request.
