@ECBG As far as I know businesses including boutiques use Facebook or at least the ones I check. I don't have a Facebook account and don't feel the need. But if you want to check out the retailers in your area they should be public and you won't have to join.

I remember when my son was getting ready to graduate from college several of his profs. Told their students " if you have a Facebook account shut it down for future hiring purposes." Future employers tend to check out what potential hirees are up to.

Just my experience, tho. Good luck w/ your job search and make sure they have medical & dental. Lol.

Future employers will see nothing you don't give them access to. If a prospective employer insists access be given to them to view your social media pages I wouldn't even consider working there, and the legality of asking has been in question.

@Moonchilde Hi Moonchilde, The profs that gave my son's class were from the business dept. of his college. Apparently, they were concerned not so much with the students but rather what others posted on their Facebook page. I should have clarified my first response. Also, military members have to be careful as well since the old "drunken pledge brother " may surface on his page. This I know first hand as well.

Hope that helps.

I'm by nature a very private person and I would hate it if I had to give up Facebook. You have a great deal of control as to how easily your account can be found and what can be viewed by setting the privacy settings. I've never felt the need to tell others every detail of my life. Most of what I post are videos or posts I think my friends would enjoy.

Some of my FB friends I do know in real life. But I also have many friends that I actually "met" on other message boards prior to when I joined FB, due to them being friends of my FB friends or due to common interests. I've exchanged messages with some truly AMAZING people who I would never have crossed physical paths with. I think it's very much the same as in real life...not every person you come in contact with is going to become your bff. Yes, there are dangerous people out there, but the vast majority of people aren't out to harm anyone.

As far business pages go, yes they do announce varous special deals and are likely public. But there are also special interest groups for pretty much any interest you might have. Some of these are tied to smaller private businesses and do offer exculsive deals only to those who have joined the specific group.

In short, instead of fearing FB, find ways to use it that work for you.

I use FB but I never put anything "personal" on there. Believe it or not, some people don't use FB for that.

I use it to socialize with people I have known for years, as well as new friends, but most of the time, I use it to talk about dogs, crocheting (there are lots of crochet groups on FB), and other hobbies or interests.

Not everyone on FB uses it to broadcast their personal lives and what they had for breakfast. LOL

I don't play any games and I don't use any "apps," because those are data mining. Of course, I don't use my real name anyway ~ or my real location ~ so it's all good........

People who use FB and THINK their stuff is personal and private don't realize that their "friends" can show their stuff to ANYONE! nuff said.

I had one back in the beginning and saw how easy it was for people to know check all of us out on the accounts.  I had folks getting notification I had joined just because we went to the same high school another life time ago.  Since I graduated with 603 people I did not know everyone.  I cancelled FB after a few weeks I did not like so many wanting to be friends and I had never heard of them.  Social Police.

Exactly. Plus there is no reason for everyone to know who I know. No fb.

I so agree, it does bother me alot when people are showing baby pics of their kids and grandkids thinking they are "safe".
