"Others" are people you chose to follow. If you don't care about what they're doing in their lives, then why did you add them in the first place? Especially if they're "all so self-absorbed". If I felt that all of my friends were self-absorbed, I think I would be looking for some new friends.
Facebook is not for everyone, but in many cases it's pretty clear that people blame Facebook when the issue is really the world they have created for themselves there.
How right you are @NYC Susan.

I've never seen anything like that on Facebook, and I've been a daily user since 2009. No porn, nothing even close. In my experience, it's one of the most family-friendly places on the internet.

There isn't anything "going on now" all of a sudden, it's just that FB has become the trending forum punching bag, the way people go after certain hosts or vendors or or "As Is" or whatever. The uninformed love to scaremonger and a certain other type of person loves to eat it up and pass it on.
Yes, I agree. Especially re "the uninformed".

The ads people see on FB are based on browsing history and what you have discussed (in a way) and/or anything you have clicked on. If a person never gives FB any interest hints, they will populate your page with paid ads of ALL kinds (apparently). I have never had porn or sexual aid ads in my feed - I guess they can deduce my interestsfairly well ;-)
It's not a bad idea to give FB some idea of what you might actually *want* to see, or at least wouldn't mind seeing. That would cut down on seeing stuff you *really* don't want to see.
Purity, Ad Block, etc are great for computer users but many people use tablets and so far at least, there are no apps for these programs. I did discover that Firefox for IPad eliminates ads automatically, though - nice bonus!
Yes, you can let FB know what types of ads would be of interest.
I've received quick little pop-up surveys from Facebook asking what I'd like to see. There's also a drop-down alongside ads, where you can indicate that it was useful or you want it hidden. If you want it hidden, you can indicate the reason why. (Just click on one of the provided choices.) That helps them determine which ads are worthwhile from both your point of view and the advertiser's. You can also ignore it completely, which is what I do 99% of the time!
You also can click on, "Why am I seeing this?" and it will tell you the reason an ad is on your page. All of this is designed to be helpful.
I just checked my Facebook, and there is currently one ad there. It's for the Manhattan Theatre Club, which is relevant to me. I usually just glance at the ads, and often I don't see any ads at all. In all my years on Facebook, ads have never been an issue.

Somehow I have two accounts so I need to delete one. I rarely comment on FB anyway.

I am getting so close to closing my account. It is starting to irritate me. So many ads and I am now getting notifications from people on some kind of site I never clicked on. Maybe I did it by accident, I don't know. And nothing but ads about what I have clicked on filling the pages. I am getting a bit tired of it. Everything is just turning into one big advertisement. But, I don't really engage much on there so it wouldn't be a big loss for me. I can see where it would be very valuable if you have a ton of family and close friends you keep up to date with. I don't really do that.

I deleated my account years ago....6 years, maybe? Maybe 8... don't know. I never used it and ONLY had one due to a wdding I couldn't attend and wanted to see the pictures.
It took about 2 years after deleating that I stopped getting "you have messages, you've been poked, you've been this or that" ....the notifications were over the top in my in-box. Same thing with Linkedin. I've been told by "those in the know" that this is common and it takes awhile for the automated responces to stop. I found that surprising but yes, they eventually did.

I have a FB account and I'm fine with it.
I do have a relative who created an account and decided after a few years to delete it. I can still type her name in and she still comes up but there are no pictures at all and no friends. However, some of her profile info. is still there including where she went to college and high school. I'm not sure why as she deleted her account 6 years ago.
I don't necessarily think deactivating your account is really deleting it as if you were never a member.

I never can figure out all these complaints I read on the forums in regard to Facebook!!! It is not Facebook I worry about, it is the rude people on the QVC forums, I hardly even read anymore, much less post!
You can make your Facebook page/account as private or personal as you want, it is up to you who you allow to be friends with,or what pages you want to see! If you have a problem with someone, unfriend them and/or block them, it is as simple as that! I love Facebook and enjoy using it! I don't "air my laundry" to others, LOL!!!![]()

Right!!!
And everybody doesn't post about everything that they are doing, every second of the live long day!
I certainly don't!
I don't post about where I am, what I am doing, or what I am eating at which restaurant.
In fact, I go days, if not weeks between posting on my page.
So no, not everybody is posting about their lives 24/7!
