I also want to chime in to AVOID the following:

Quizzes....like "what movie star was I in my past life".....

CONTESTS......"Like and share this page" to win a vacation for 6 to Disney world for 6

Typing AMEN on a picture of an abused dog, sick child.... veteran....saying if you 'don't' you don't 'care'....

Stuff like this are ALL SCAMS to get your profile info.....then you will have issues...

Set your privacy settings and don't fall for that kind of stuff and you will be fine

When I went to delete my account - a prompt came up saying I could "suspend" my account which I did - I don't care for FB anymore - could care less what others are doing in their lives - they are all so self-absorbed.

It doesn make any difference now since I "deactivated" my account but all this stuff started when I "unfriended" all my friends.

I was left with a blank slate.  No "friends".    Everyday the list FB pulled were people I would never associate with, they had pics of holding guns, knives, compromising women, people in foreign universities etc.  I would delete the people individually and they kept coming back.

Thanks everyone for all your comments and suggestions, one can learn a lot from here.

For a while, when they started having ads I was getting a lot of porn ads, mostly  for "male enhancement" products etc. Now I've seen a lot of naked men in my life as a nurse , but on FB with an  ******** was way too much. Anyway - I downloaded an app to block ads and that got rid of them. There are several apps out there that block unwanted stuff like this for you. I used Ad Block. So glad to be rid of that krap.

That's an excellent point, I have a relative as one of my friends and she's the Queen Of The Quizzes, and she started getting all these wierd men as suggested friends and I pointed out for her to read th privacy statement on the quiz website where her info is "shared".....and told her that was the problem. She changed her settings and stopped the quizzes and it stopped...

There isn't anything "going on now" all of a sudden, it's just that FB has become the trending forum punching bag, the way people go after certain hosts or vendors or or "As Is" or whatever. The uninformed love to scaremonger and a certain other type of person loves to eat it up and pass it on.

The ads people see on FB are based on browsing history and what you have discussed (in a way) and/or anything you have clicked on.  If a person never gives FB any interest hints, they will populate your page with paid ads of ALL kinds (apparently). I have never had porn or sexual aid ads in my feed - I guess they can deduce my interestsfairly well ;-)

It's not a bad idea to give FB some idea of what you might actually *want* to see, or at least wouldn't mind seeing. That would cut down on seeing stuff you *really* don't want to see.

Purity, Ad Block, etc are great for computer users but many people use tablets and so far at least, there are no apps for these programs. I did discover that Firefox for IPad eliminates ads automatically, though - nice bonus!

Mark Zuckerberg, Facebook, worth $50 billion, bought one of the smaller islands (the entire thing) in Hawaii, then proceeded to sue all of the native inhabitants to get them out.

When the press got really bad, he withdrew the lawsuit.

One of my daughters told me this just a few days ago.

"Others" are people you chose to follow.  If you don't care about what they're doing in their lives, then why did you add them in the first place?  Especially if they're "all so self-absorbed".  If I felt that all of my friends were self-absorbed, I think I would be looking for some new friends.

Facebook is not for everyone, but in many cases it's pretty clear that people blame Facebook when the issue is really the world they have created for themselves there.
