Does anyone wear these in place of masks? Are they comfortable? I went to Costco yesterday and saw more people wearing them. What do we think of them?

Face shields are worn to protect your eyes from getting the virus. You should still be masked below them.

You are suppose to wear a mask w/the face shield. I only wear them when I go to BJ's & the grocery store because there are always a lot of snot nosed kids, rug rats & ankle biters either running around or in the carts touching every thing.

I wear a face shield without a mask, it's simply not needed. Stores in my area offer workers a choice, masks or face shields & most wear a shield because it's cooler, easier to breathe & doesn't irritate the skin because it doesn't touch it. My shield is on an eyeglass frame that fits over my prescription glasses so it's an easy on off & it can be cleaned anytime with a hand wipe...I bought mine on Etsy & liked it so much that I bought more on Ebay to give away to anyone struggling to wear a mask like I did. It was a happy day when I threw away all my masks & I will never go back.

Why, then, do healthcare workers wear BOTH? I've never seen one of them wear a shield without wearing a mask.

Excerpt from: https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/nioshtic-2/20043721.html
Face shields can substantially reduce the short-term exposure of healthcare workers to large infectious aerosol particles, but smaller particles can remain airborne longer and flow around the face shield more easily to be inhaled. Thus, face shields provide a useful adjunct to respiratory protection for workers caring for patients with respiratory infections. However, they cannot be used as a substitute for respiratory protection when it is needed.

If you are going to wear a face shield, you still HAVE to wear a mask!
Having said that, at work, we have to wear both, and the consensus is, it's hot and uncomfortable, and I agree.
Maybe try wearing goggles.
