I've heard that sound before, but up close and personal it really doesn't sound like a dog. I had a cat who was terrified of everything, but especially going to the vet. When I would put him in his carrier to take him to the vet, he would make similar gutteral sounds as if he was in dire circumstances, like an animal caught in a trap. Poor guy. When he did that, he would usually lose control of his bladder or bowels as well. On the way home in the carrier, he would be quiet as a mouse.

How do we know there wasn't a dog down below and the cat climbed up to get away from it. Also, one of my cats growls just like a dog when she is face to face with one of our other cats...but she ran away like a bullet train from the new kitten when they met face to face. That was an accident but we were sure glad of the outcome....have to keep the kitten separated until he's at least 1 year old because he's so tiny.

No, but I've heard a bird bark. My friend had a puppy they still needed to find a home for. I went over to her house and told her I thought they'd given the dog away. She told me they did, but it was the bird barking. Sounded just like the dog! Cute as a bug.

One of my cats used to bark at the birds outside when she was younger and could jump up by the windows.

I've never heard a cat bark, but I've heard them growl. It's scary, too!
