I would start with using the bookcases as "anchor" pieces.   Put a desk...or maybe  an entertainment center between the cases.  Or possibly use them as  frames on both sides of a fireplace.    If the bookcases are finished  on the back, you might use them as a room divider...

Yes!  These two bookcases are against a wall with a wood 6' high closed cabinet between them.

In my wildest imagnation .... I can't picture empty bookcases.

I ran out of bookcase space in my apartment about 10 years ago .... and bought a Kindle so I have "space" for more books.

@ALRATIBA  I hear you.  The bookshelves looked beautiful with all the books.  I have purchased some newer books but most of our reads are on Nook or Kindle these days.

Thank you all for your great ideas.  You have opened my mind to new possibilities for these beautiful bookcases. I really liked the look of the old books!  I'm beginning to realize the efforts of cleaning out and tossing stuff after my DH and I pass.  I thought I would slightly lessen the "load" but, I'm not sure I've made the right decision. I have boxed up the books.  My son came over yesterday and said my house smelled like an old library Smiley Happy
