Re: Earthquake in Philadelphia area?

I am sorry for the posters who were frightened. Having lived in Southern California my whole life, I can tell you that a 4.7 or 4.8 would not even make me get up from my couch if I was sitting down. It will get your attention but it's not a big deal. I know that it's all relative to what we have experienced in our life but I am glad that it was not a serious earthquake.

I'm glad it wasn't serious either.  Though I did see that some people in Newark had their homes damaged enough to have to leave until they could be repaired.

It's all relative to what you're used to.  If a few inches of snow were forcast for southern California, I have a feeling that the news would be making a big deal of it.

Some areas can't cope with an inch or two and others like upstate NY deal with many feet of snow at a time.

To those of us in the northeast we just don't get earthquakes.

Re: Earthquake in Philadelphia area?

I just found this about the quake:

The U.S. Geological Survey confirmed the "relatively small" earthquake was centered about a mile north of Oldwick near the intersection of Old Turnpike Road and Hill and Dale Road."

This is about a mile from my family.  So far there is no damage to their home.

I suspect the comments from Californians are due to the often snarky comments we get about why would we live here with earthquakes.

I appreciate it’s less common in the NE. 💕

(Fellow Southern CA who has been through some 7’s)

I agree with you.  It amazes me that people who live in places that have tornados and hurricanes would never dare live in California because of earthquakes.

@lgfan - Hurricanes are a bit different. We know they are coming and have plenty of time to prepare and evacuate, if necessary. - But I can't imagine anyone really having that as their only or main reason to avoid a state.

Re: Earthquake in Philadelphia area?

I watched a video yesterday about the tectonic plates and how the one that is connected to this earthquake is usually very stable. It seems to be moving now and a big earthquake or series of them could cause unspeakable damage. This is the same one connected to the earthquakes in the 1800s when the Mississippi River reversed course.

The planet isn't nearly as stable as many like to think. There are long-range (thousands of years into the future) projections of the continents realigning that make for a completely different looking planet from what we have now. Most of the land masses are expected to drift back together into one single land mass on most of the long-term projections. It's pretty interesting stuff.

Continental Drift.....Plate Tectonics

We're all in constant movement

Look at South America fitting into the African Continent

The India subcontinent collided into Asia, creating the Himalayas
