For the safety of both mother and child, many animals have their young under cover of darkness, protecting them temporarily from predators.

(A lot of human babies are born late at night, too).

It broke my heart to see Jackie sitting on those eggs last winter.  Some mornings both she and the nest had a pile of snow on them.

I think Mother Nature has timed when the little eaglets can actually fly so they have the summer months to leave the nest and start being independent eagles.

Since Sunny and Gizmo are still a couple years from ever mating, I wonder what the heck they do all winter.

@Tinkrbl44   Oh boy did I get the chills tuning in to see shadow or Jackie covered in snow.  The white of winter all around them.  Thank God, Lake here doesn't freeze!  Although my grandaugheter goes there when it snows.  The BBQ on the balcony, and go in the spa on the deck. They rent a place up there with friends, usually January, feb.  They love it there.  It is a magical place.  A plentiful feeding place for the Eagles for sure. I think Shadow may be an exceptional hunter and fisherman though.  There were a few times he brought back squirrel though?   Not sure.  I wonder if it was convenience , or fish were cold and hiding too dee0 in topor, lol!

The webcam is still down, so I'm guessing our handsome Shadow is out searching for new sticks and whatnot.

Nature's timeclock…

Eagle Image

Jackie and Shadow are on nature's timeclock and they decide when they will be ready to begin nestorations.

Meanwhile, their occasional nest visits are gifts, as are listening to their vocals and viewing them on their favorite trees. These reassuring moments let us know they are doing well and are still a closely bonded couple.

Yesterday began with several long and beautiful chortling sessions by our devoted pair. Such a perfect way to start off the day! Later on, after spending some afternoon quiet time perched together on the Lookout Snag tree, they headed to the nest for more bonding time.

Shadow arrived first and took a look around at all the sticks under his feet but he didn't seem too motivated to get started rearranging any of them just yet. Instead, his eyes focused on the sky as he spotted his lovely lady on her way in.

Jackie arrived in her usual stunning fashion, landing next to her loving mate. They didn't seem in the mood to redecorate, so they poked around a bit but were more focused on observing the sounds around them. At one point, Shadow curled his neck around and used his beak to give Jackie a little love nibble on her feathers. So sweet!

It's been a warm week so Jackie may have taken some spa time to cool off with a dip in the lake. It's good to see that black smudge on her head during her last visit was likely just dirt, as it is now clean and white again.

The evening ended with a long awaited return to their favorite nighttime roosting tree. The eagles may have encountered some nocturnal owl activity a few weeks ago that was heard on the nest cam. This could have kept them away from the Roost Tree temporarily, but hopefully they have reclaimed it and will now be back more often.

This morning they gave us a calm visit to the Lookout Snag. Jackie cuddled up close to Shadow until he left. She remained perched for a while, sunning herself with her wings down and open.

Bald eagles often seem to be creatures of habit, however, since nature is ever-changing, we can only remain patient, allowing it to be in control. We are so delighted you have joined us on this journey!

I'm sure he's thinking about sticks for the new addition to the nest.  They'll have new additions coming.   Heart

The webcam has been off for a few days, but it's now back on.

Shadow brings in two new sticks ~Jackie approves…

Eagle Image

The sound of lovely eagle chortles on Monday afternoon was the beginning of some beautiful moments later that evening with Jackie and Shadow in the nest.

Late afternoon, Shadow arrived on that most popular Lookout Snag branch and perched there for just about five minutes. It was clear he had eaten recently, as his crop was noticeably full. He decided to make the short flight over to the nest, and although we couldn't see him, the sound was clear, that he had snapped a branch off a tree somewhere along the way.

He landed on the front porch, breathing hard with that new branch underfoot. He studied everything around him before releasing the odd-shaped stick from his talons. As part of it dangled over the side of the nest, he looked up and around for Jackie.

He promptly flew out again and returned with a smaller stick, which he quickly placed. Still no Jackie, so he headed to the Roost Tree.

About ten minutes passed, then Jackie appeared, also with her crop full from a recent meal. She seemed very purposeful as she flew directly over to a sturdy branch under the nest and below the stick basement. Her body stood firm as her head bobbed around and she looked in all directions. Hmm, no Shadow… so she flew over to the Roost Tree and there he was!

Perhaps Shadow just happened to mention that he brought in a couple of new pieces of stick furniture, so she flew back over to the nest to check them out. She seemed to approve, and didn't stay long before hopping up to the back porch and heading over to roost with her handsome Shadow for the night.

After dark, it was nice to see Fiona, our little nocturnal flying squirrel, who often enjoys scavenging around the nest for treats. She was heard chattering about something just before she quickly scurried through the nest and then disappeared over the edge.

Whether you are a long time dedicated viewer and devoted follower of Jackie and Shadow, or a new fan to this nest, we are delighted you have joined us on this journey!

The night cam is fixed.  yahoo.gif

It needs adjustment though to show the whole nest including the back porch.
