This is the second day the birds have been left alone on the nest for about 15-20 minutes.  I'm worried a raven can just swoop in and grab one.

i was also worried about the temperature, but right now TWC says it's 53 degrees and sunny.

This is my first eagle watch, and am wondering what is instinctual with eagles.

Sunday afternoon, approx 53 degrees.  Both parents are there, but the babies have been uncovered for almost two hours.

Is Mama bird leaving them exposed to get some sun?  Is she concerned herr babes aren't getting enough Vitamin D?

WHY would she leave them exposed for so long?

Rain tomorrow.

The babies have been fed several times today, and the snow is melting.   Rain tomorrow with a high of 45 degrees.

@Tinkrbl44   She is probably sore and needing to move. I do know as the days pass she will expose them to elements a little at a time. I don't think Eagleys fledge til 19 weeks or so. I can't watch that. lol, I'm too controlling.. lol, I would have to protect them. Before fledging they need to stretch and exercise their wings.  They are probably moving a lot under her. lol. I am not posative, but think this is,what is happening. Each day toward fledging they are exposed more and more. 50 degrees isn't too cold for them.  I don't think.

ETA. I looked up some facts I stated in above post. I need to correct a bit. The Eaglets do what they call branching at 10 weeks. That is  hopping around nest and to and from branches right by nest. They Fledge at about 14 weeks. That's when they fly away from nest and explore.  Usually at this point mom and dad follow them and keep eye out, teaching them to hunt and such. They will stay with parents a long time, years even. I know Crows can.  Once they fledge they help around the nest, get food, stay close to parents. They even help mom and dad make a new nest for new siblings, lol.  They help make the nest, and even help feed.   Then after will go off on their own.

OMG, what a relief!   I was wondering just HOW a little bird could flap its wings and leave the nest and be gone forever   .... parents not knowing if they'd survive or if they knew enough to know how to get food.

@Tinkrbl44  Jackie & Shadow will leave the chicks for an hour or so as they get bigger.  This gives the chicks time to explore their nesting area/home.  I noticed one of the chicks has started to groom itself.

One or both parent will be watching them from a distant branch.

If you notice, Shadow has been bringing a lot of sticks to the nest.  The sticks are used to barricade around the edges of the nest to keep the chicks from falling out as they hop around in testing out their wings while exploring & pooping.

Some time last evening, Jackie took the dead chick out of the nest, flew off somewhere to dump it.

So sad about the little eaglet.  I am so glad Jackie took off with it.  She will find a place to bury it.  I am glad the other two are thriving at least.  I know crows keep strengthening their nests as well. Crows around here use tons of sticks and small branches, and make a very deep, and wide nest, but the  chicks are pretty dang active. Geesh, I had a nest close by my fence in a cypress tree. Took a lot to contain those chicks when they reach 4 weeks lol.  Full time job. So,etime the mom would be so fed up she would gather with wings and beak, and sit on them lol lol.  I think size wise, the eaglets are bigger than we think. I would imagine one of those babies at a few weeks is nearly as big as a small crow, lol. Imagine trying to keep them all in line in an Aerie so high up!!!

I'm really rooting for the little one.

Doesn't seem to *feed* well.  Food will be held right to it's beak and it doesn't accept it.

Bigger eaglet with sit on it-- it's head, it's wing, to keep it down.

Poor thing just gives up.

I hope it makes it.

@Lucky Charm

After the shock of one eaglet dying, now I'm even more concerned about the little guy.

I keep remembering he's 5 days younger than the bigger chick, and while it may be a lot now, in a month the 5 day difference will be negligible ... I think.

Fingers crossed.  Heart

A group of eagles is called an assembly or a convocation of eagles. Lo I wonder where the names came from. The funniest is a murder of crows, lol

what about a trembling of finches.
