When I taught in Japan, I took advantage of some Saturday bus trips for Americans. We went different places, but we usually stopped mid-morning for a rest stop by the same resort lake. Someone on the trip recommended Unagi pies, a delicious pastry sold there. It was a "thing" among the bus trip participants. Once you were let in on it, you couldn't wait to get one. It was delicious. Not long before I left Japan, I paid attention to what "unagi" meant! My delicious pastry contained ground up eel - YUCK!!! I never had one again. **shudder**

But at the time that you were actually eating it, you thought that was delicious, right?

So before you knew what unagi was, you actually liked it.

@beach-mom it's kind of like when you first find out what calamari really is . . . Smiley Happy

Oh yeah. I don't "do" calamari.

What's a real bummer is that whenever I have a meal at a nearby tourist-laden wharf, most of the restaurants give you a free appetizer. It is - you guessed it! I can eat a couple of bites to be polite without gagging, but can't manage more than that.

Saw this on FB yesterday. What's really priceless is reading what the eels are usually called, and then looking at the photo.

@momtochloe - I don't like that either, although it's very popular around here! DH and I both won't touch it! LOL! Smiley Wink
