Yes, I tend to agree children’s names can be challenging

Looking at the story through HALF FULL glasses,

her daughter rose above it! 🌼💛

Some woman's poor child HAD to rise above it.  She was disadvantaged because of a whim of her mom's.  I don't see anything good about it.  Why do that to your kid?

It should be illegal for a parent to name their child something obviously crazy. 🤨

It's probably nothing short of a miracle that this woman survived her childhood.  I'm sure her mother wasn't very stable.

@Pqfan , many years ago I worked at St Joseph Hospital (now St Jude owns that property).  Hardest job ever imaginable.  I would be banned if I dared to post some of the God given names (first names only) to many of my patients.. I haven't a clue as to what their parents were thinking .

I might have considered changing it.  Who knows. A rose by any other name, and all that.

Self-identity is complicated at best.  We work with what we have, and change what we need if we are able.

It's a cute story.

@Pqfan , it was one hard, demanding and very interesting job to say the least.  I was a radiology technologist and every day proved to be quite different in more ways than one.

I thought this was about to be a thread about a new version of Dr. Pepper, although Pepsi doesn't own Dr. Pepper.

As though the soda would be infused with THC.

What do I know.

I agree, however, that the name was stupid and this story could have very well turned out in a different way.

Congrats to this young woman and I also doubt her name caused only bullying; guarantee there were people who thought the name to be cool.

Congrats to this hard-working scholar!

We all have our own approaches.  I would have simply taken a literal, "sort of" translation of the name, or would have "telescoped" it, to something very close in sound, but without drug or commercial product associations.

Mary Jane, or one of its many variants--  Marijane, etc.

Mary

Juana

Juanita

Maja

Even "M.J."--  cute nickname for Mary Jane.

She'd still have a connection to the sound or the spelling of the name she'd had since birth, but without dubious associations.  Personally, as a social worker in the substance abuse field, I never could take lightly a given name with those associations.
