Re: Does anyone else have a fear of going to the dentist..

I was so scared of going but about 4 plus years ago, I bit a jawbreaker thinking it was a gumball and I literally dislocated my jaw and broke a molar. Went to the Dentist and was referred to the Orthodontist. November 28th will be my 5th year wearing braces to correct my jaw. Just last year they made a bridge to replace the molar I broke in 4. This is what I get for eating leftover Halloween candy at the office and not knowing what it really was. I've been going to the Orthodontist every month since then, now it's a breeze, my fear is gone.

Re: Does anyone else have a fear of going to the dentist..

Down here in Tx. they're blood pressure fanatics. Mine is great at home like 139/85 not bad for a older person. I took a nerve pill before I went in , in hopes of being calm. Outwardly, you can't tell I'm anxious, don't shake, hand is steady, etc. but, when they reach for that ----blood pressure cuff the bottom # just yesterday was 103 . Big deal! but nope he wasn't satisfied they want it perfect and I can't perform like a trained monkey. I just went in for a cleaning they check it just for a cleaning in Tx. ! Stupid. Up in Ind. you have procedures done and they never check your pressure. I've been going every 6months for 40 yrs. never a problem, but, if you move to Tx. they want you to be a perfect 120/80 I guess.

long story short I'm looking for another one that doesn't make such a big production out of anxiety blood pressure. Even took my cuff from home showing past readings. I had asked if it bothered him so much just write me a prescription for a few nerve pills. Nope, they can't or won't do that either. Just wanted 2-3 I'm not a junkie. So, I keep changing till I can find 1 I can work with. Temporary elevations in blood pressure that will go down when you leave shouldn't be such a big deal. I even offered to sign a waiver of liability when he said "you could have a stroke, etc." Ol' Bulls--I haven't had one in over 40 some odd yrs. and have had 2 crowns, numerous fillings, cleanings, pullings, etc. I can't work with people like that.

Oh my gosh I can't begin to imagine a dislocated jaw. When I left the dentist office today she said I will be seeing a lot of her. Oh boy! I know what you mean about that pesky Holloween candy, mine was a caramel something or other. Took out a big filling and left the shell of the tooth. Once I get all of this dental work done and pay for it maybe it will be incentive to stay away from candy. Keep my teeth in good shape and my hips too.

For many years, I was a patient at the University of Texas Dental School. The students did a good job but they were slow. A typical session lasted 4 hours. I was such a bundle of nerves, I actually fell asleep while my teeth were being drilled.

Re: Does anyone else have a fear of going to the dentist..

It doesn't bother me, and last year I had months of extensive dental work done. I was practically living at the dentist. lol. For some unknown reason Ive had trouble with my teeth in adult hood. Ive had failed root canals (from another dentist in the past, not the one I have now) and all kinds of issues. So Im used to going.

BUT my brother hates it. Every time hes going for a root canal he tells me 10X how horrible it is. (And I get shots in my spine and when I tell my brother he sounds like hes going to pass out).

So you are not alone! Don't feel bad!

Anyway, my dentist uses numbing agents from France. NEVER feel a thing. (thank GOD).

PS My dentist also looks like Santa Claus (but not as heavy!). lol.

For me, the worse part is the waiting room. I've had the same dentist since I was a teen, so he's like an old friend. But, he is getting up in years, and I dread the day I'll have to choose a new dentist.

no, i don't mind going. i had 5 cavities when i was five. i think the dentists gave me something to sleep in the chair because it took me a while to wake up. i have had wisdom teeth pulled with just the procaine injections, teeth pulled for bridges - even seeing the big pliers didn't scare me. drills, needles, chairside root canals and surgical root canal. have had it all except implants. i take better care of my teeth now though! the ones i still have.

Re: Does anyone else have a fear of going to the dentist..

I have fear when I have to actually see the dentist. I was blessed with good teeth and only have a couple cavities. No bad experiences. It's been a lot of years since I've seen the dentist other than when she comes in after the cleaning to have a look.
