There's always a run on shovels, snowblowers and ice melt, too
!
@eddyandme I always wonder what they did with the snow shovel they bought last year! ![]()

We had a blizzard in March of 1993 I believe. It started Saturday and went into Sunday.
We got 28 inches of snow and the drifts from blowing snow were insane.
We got the driveway cleared out late Sunday and the roads were not great but passable on Monday. I drove 24 miles round trip to the next town.
I live in a rural area. The state did a great job of clearing the main roads. Most folks around here have trucks or tractors with plows.

I'd run out of fresh produce and eggs, but other than that I have everything we need.
What kind of foods do you stock up on that won't spoil in a few months?

@CrazyKittyLvr2 I remember that weekend. I lived in an apartment and didn't have the need for a shovel, the complex plowed and did the sidewalks and entry ways. I dug my car out with a dish pan. A fellow neighbor said you're using a dish pan? Yes, I was, and he was using a laundry basket with holes. I said, at least mine doesn't have holes. We both laughed. After that, I did buy a shovel when it cleared up. I think we got 23-24 inches that weekend. We haven't had a snow accumulation that large since then. (In one day).

@We rescue cats wrote:I don't remember what year this was probably 1995 or so, it was right before Thanksgiving. The house at the top left is our neighbor's, the blue line is our lane from the main road to our house, the highlift is our plow guy coming to dig us out 5 days after we were snowed in....there was 4-5 feet of snow on parts of our lane.
We used to make sure to have food on hand, canned, frozen and of course lots of water and wood for heat. . . I have to admit, we have become very lax with all of this because we just don't have the storms like we used to get. But I do make sure our pantry is stocked...at least we no longer smoke!

Holy Moly, @We rescue cats
THAT is bonafide buried in snow! Whoa!

@Jk9 wrote:Absolutely happens in SC and it's when sighting a snowflake is a potential! We usually just stay home and avoid all that.
@Jk9 It sure does! We stay away from it, too...might run out of bread, but we'll manage. "Possible" snow is forecasted for the SC Midlands Friday night/Saturday morning. I wouldn't mind a light dusting--makes everything pretty, and then it's gone in a day or two.
Do you remember the snowstorm of 1973? Thirteeen or so inches where I live, AND we had thundersnow! We've never had that much snow since.

I admire people with the good sense to plan ahead. And the people who don't who are smart enough to live next to people who do and are kind.

The problem with this snow is that it will stay the whole week. Not a day with anything warmer then 32F So it's not a day of snow, just a week of it.

I have two refrigerators and two seperate deep freezers. My freezers are full of homemade soups, baked goods, pasta sauce and lots of veggies and fruits from the summer and fall harvest.
I also have homemade home canned jam and jellies, applesauce, pickles and tomato's.
I have a pantry in my basement that has some store bought items like canned kidney beans, pinto beans, dried pasta, etc...also dried beans and lentils.
I always have a stash of different types of flour, powdered milk, sugar and other items to bake with.
I buy butter 6 lbs at a time and always have some in the fridge and freezer.
I keep my items moving along so they don't expire. I very seldom buy ready to eat items or highly processed foods.
We also don't eat out unless we are with friends.
Right now my freezers are full. I just put three different types of soups in there. I need to use up some of my items because I have no more room.
I often go weeks without grocery shopping...except for produce for salads and eggs, but I usually get free eggs from my neighbor. Salad items don't keep well and we use a lot of them.
