Re: Do you take vitamins/supplements?

I do take an Omega 3 supplement recommended by my doctor in an attempt to ease my dry eye - already have plugs, take Restasis, use lubricant gels, and this supplement is one extra layer. Helping somewhat.

Otherwise, nothing extra at this time. I did take iron years back, but my blood tests no longer suggest the need.

Re: Do you take vitamins/supplements?

Absolutely, under the advice and direction of my internist and my lupus doctor.

I take a multivitamin, CoQ10 for the heart, vitamin D for a lupus deficiency and probiotics.

I just recently started taking glucosamine (as suggested by my MD) as it has been found helpful in dealing with inflammation which is the basis of lupus attacks.

I can honestly say I feel so much better on this regimen.

Noel, I didn't know you had been diagnosed with lupus. My father passed away in 1979 from complications of SLE. It isn't an easy disease to manage, and I hope you are doing well.

He was given a 5 year window, but thanks to vitamins and supplements, extended his life to 16 years. He did a lot of research (and that was in the days before the internet) and even his doctors said he did a better job at extending his life than anything they could have done at the time.

You are so right about inflammation and the way you will feel. I have been doing a lot of reading about foods, trying to avoid the inflammatory ones and increase those thought to decrease inflammation. I can tell when my diet is off track, I feel so lousy.

I am a firm believer in vitamins and mineral supplements. No matter how healthy someone's diet is, they can't begin to get adequate amounts of most vitamins and minerals. Then, if you factor in any disease or deficiencies, you really are lacking. I don't think that everyone needs the same things, but virtually everyone needs some things.

I have arthritis, and find Vitamin D3, Vitamin E and Glucosomene and Chondroitin to be helpful. I have taken the mulit pack vitamin that Q used to sell, but they really made me feel bloated and uncomfortable, so I stopped those many years ago.

All vitamins and supplements need to be managed by a doctor (although very many have been trained incorrectly about them) or nutritionist who knows what levels are safe. Having regular kidney and liver functions testing is a good idea in general, but I think especially important if you take regular meds, or high doses of any vitamins or supplements.

I take a Vit D supplement, an iron supplement, a omega 3 supplement, a eye support supplement, and a multi. The iron I take every other day. I also take astragalus daily for immune support.

Re: Do you take vitamins/supplements?

Yes. BUT!

If you are already taking dietary supplements, you should inform your doctor (which most have, here). One may think side effects happen only with medications or if certain health conditions exists.

A mutivitamin / & mineral supplement is what I take. My parents had that in our every day regime.

It would take a nutritionist to provide anyone with a perfect diet....and I, personally-for myself- do not believe that I can do that with an every 'day' 3Xs =meals.

CHECK with your doctor- make sure a list of all vitamins/minerals that you take, along with the dosage is provided.

Hi there Smile

I'm so sorry to hear about your dad, MIO ( <- Mom In Ohio ). 90% of those with SLE are women, but the men suffer just as much. Unfortunately, there still isn't much doctors can do, and most of the treatment is a band-aid approach to the attacks, and people like your Dad finding ways to help themselves. He had to have been a brave man and intelligent!

Is your arthritis RA? I know how difficult any arthritis is, especially RA. Those of us with challenges like your Dad had, and you and I, know ourselves best and what helps. I'm really glad you've found things which help you because you and I are bound to have deficits. It was my rheumatologist who ran the vitamin D test and found a deficiency.

I am really lucky that my team of MDs are well versed on supplements and vitamins.

I hope you're doing well, it's a constant and daily struggle with lupus as I'm sure you know. But I'm doing better than most Smile

ps I also eat healthy. Treats are only for holidays.

Re: Do you take vitamins/supplements?

I've taken vitamins since I was a little girl. Knock on wood, I've been extremely healthy my whole life. I'm not changing anything.
