Re: Do you like, or use the self-checkouts at the stores?

[ Edited ]

Absolutely.  I've been doing this for years and years:

Only, I cut off the tips of disposable non latex gloves, and use one tip on my pointer finger to operate the self checkout.

Or, I use the rubber eraser end of a small golf pencil to type in my numbers.

But, otherwise, It's much faster, and near the edge (door) of my two supermarkets.  Not in the middle where too many folks are standing in line or roaming around.

I use them if I only have a few items.  It peeves me off when I see people with carts full going through the self-checkout.  The ones in our store aren't meant for that kind of shopping.  You can only scan so many items before the area at the end of the belt gets jammed up and you have to stop and bag groceries to get them out of the way.  Then you can go back to scanning and have to stop again.  And round and round it goes.  It takes so much longer to checkout this way.

My local Giant Eagle no longer has baggers either. The only way you get your groceries bagged for you is if another cashier has no customers and comes to help out.  Otherwise, you either bag yourself or you have to stand there and wait for the cashier to ring everything through and then bag everything.  And some of the cashiers don't even try to bag anything.  They just assume you are going to do it yourself.  And while I do, it peeves me off because that store charges a lot of money. The last thing I feel like I should have to do is bag my own stuff.

@Lipstickdiva  There are no self checkouts at our local Shop rite. Nor have there ever been baggers. Everyone bags their own. Cashiers are fast, buyers who are bagging are fast, in and out fast. Best prices in the area.

@qualitygal

I use the self checkout whenever I'm in a store that offers them.  It's always a shorter line or no line and I can bag things the way I want them.  Also, with COVID concerns I'm happy to have one less person handling my purchases. I scan and drop directly into a bag, so things go from cart to bag without touching the counter at all.  I find it quick and easy peasy.

As far as impulse buys, I always shop with a list.  If something we use is on sale, I'll buy it even though it's not on the list.  I also occasionally pick up something new that I think we might like.  Honestly can't relate to the idea of buying things we "don't need."  Do you mean like snacks?

I have my big grocery items delivered.  When I do go into a grocery store, it's just for a few items and I usually use self checkout.   I am short on will power, walking around a grocery store is a lot of temptation.  That's why I get in and out as quickly as possible.  I also have a shopping list on my phone.

I am currently having my groceries delivered but I did not use self checkouts when I went to the store.  I feel like I am complicit in taking someones job if I do.

No need to cut off the tip of your gloves.  I keep mine on the whole time.

I only use self checkout when I have fewer items. I would never try to self checkout with a full cart. I don’t shop much in person now, and I don’t browse as much since COVID.

I do not use the self check outs.  First, I believe these eliminate jobs - granted not high paying jobs, but, for some, particularly part-timers, those positions are needed.  Second, for the price of groceries, et al, no self service for me!  I also enjoy the 'comraderie', putting a smile on someone even if we're having a 'bad day'.  One good thing about the 'good old days',was interaction with one another.Woman Sad

As far as going off the list, yeah, occasionally I do so.  I somehow have become my neighbor's personal shopper and do pick up something I think she'd like once in awhile, but, usually pay for it - everybody deserves a treat!Woman Very Happy

Re: Do you like, or use the self-checkouts at the stores?

I only use them if they make me. Most grocery stores around here close the regular checkout lanes an hour or so before closing time for the store. I might find myself making a late run to the grocery for something and have to use self checkout.

I especially dislike self checkout when I have produce to buy - and I almost always do.

ThRe: I would prefer to use the Scan and Go

[ Edited ]

Walmart offers the scan and go only when you buy the plus feature.  It should be open for everyone.  I could scan and bag as I shop and when I am done I pay with my phone and leave.  I wouldn't have to empty cart and bag since it would already be in a bag and packed as I like.   Cold items all in one bag and so on.  I contacted Walmart to complain about paying for this featue.  Our Walmart makes us bag our items if we go to a cashier with our bags.
