@panda1234  I so agree. The stores always seem to have someone stationed at the self checkout lanes to deal with glitches. From where I sit, I'd rather see them simply have that 'extra' person open another register... I don't like them and only use them if forced to or when I only have an item or two... I used to be tempted to browse and ended up with items not on my list... These days, when I go, I get in and out as expeditiously as possible, but am also using the delivery options...

Before the pandemic I shopped at a lot of stores that used self-checkout (Target, Walmart, Home Depot, drug stores, and our grocery store

HEB )......  Now I use Instacart for groceries and shop in stores (Hobby Lobby, At Home, Petsmart, Bath & Body Works with cashiers with plexiglass and the checkout is disinfected)

Self checkouts are NOT created equal...Always have some sort of a problem with Walmart self checks--item won't scan or something goes awry

Also had issues at Target checking out my purchase of a couple of large storage bins that didnt fit on the scanner, no scanning gun and the Target Self Checkout "Helpers" watched me struggle and were of no help either.... Woman Frustrated  And a friend of mine also had problems with a purchase... Whats bad this store closes its human cashier checkouts so the staff can vacuum so you are left to handle these types of problem with the self check on your own...

The self checks at Home Depot and the grocery store and the drug store---no problem---easy peasy....

@Desertdi     I did not know people worry about what other people are thinking about what is in a cart?  Who has time for that when shopping.  I think you are over worrying.... what in the heck are you buying that someone would be judging you for having in your cart?  I mean, TP paper is really rather embarressing, but I see people with it in their carts all the time.... no one is judging you for what is in your cart.

@SeaMaiden    You'd be surprised at some of the "comments".....

@Desertdi    then that is THEIR problem and they are idiots. Do not let those few idiots make you feel embarressed or uncomfortable.  99% of people are not that way.

Re: Do you like, or use the self-checkouts at the stores?

It's the only way I check out, always have, always will.

I like that I can pay more attention to the price I'm being charged.  Many times the sale price or correct price doesn't come up....you'd be surprised.

When someone else is scanning my items while I'm still unloading my cart, it's hard to catch any pricing error.

Plus, I don't like putting my things on the belt, doesn't matter if the clerk is spraying the belt in between.

I can bag my own things as I want and they go straight from my cart into the bags.

So glad almost every store we shop at has the option to do self checkout.

Loving not having any kind of checkout or cart pushing since March.  Never saw how much of a chore it was.  Love pickup.

The other thing I have come to see, ordering only every two weeks forces you to focus.  If you can't do a quick trip, you do indeed need a really good list.

I like the self checkouts, if I don't have a big order.

If I have a large order, I find the find the self check outs, kind of awkward.  That may be just me, though.

My SO whizzes through those self check outs, like a pro, no matter how big, the order.

And no, I can't get through a store, without being tempted by something.  I may very well not buy my temptation, but, tempted I am!

Re: Do you like, or use the self-checkouts at the stores?

Used to embarrass me to have to buy feminine monthly items. Now, don't have to worry about it. Had hysto at 42.  I see older people buying Depends, young men buying 'items of interest' for weekend coming up.

Older people want to sack up their Depends and such as fast as possible.

LOL

I put my 44 DDD bra on the belt I"m sure people are going "Da*n" !

Everything is out there now, not like it used to be, though.

Let it all hang out. ROFL

I use them if I only have a few items.  It peeves me off when I see people with carts full going through the self-checkout.  The ones in our store aren't meant for that kind of shopping.  You can only scan so many items before the area at the end of the belt gets jammed up and you have to stop and bag groceries to get them out of the way.  Then you can go back to scanning and have to stop again.  And round and round it goes.  It takes so much longer to checkout this way.

My local Giant Eagle no longer has baggers either. The only way you get your groceries bagged for you is if another cashier has no customers and comes to help out.  Otherwise, you either bag yourself or you have to stand there and wait for the cashier to ring everything through and then bag everything.  And some of the cashiers don't even try to bag anything.  They just assume you are going to do it yourself.  And while I do, it peeves me off because that store charges a lot of money. The last thing I feel like I should have to do is bag my own stuff.

I rarely use them. Walmart only takes credit or debit cards at this point due to lack of change, they say, and I only use cash. It takes jobs away and if you have heavy items like litter or pet food, you have to struggle to get it out of the cart to scan it.

@catter70

My Walmart has a hand held scanner at each self checkout register.  You just pick it up and scan any heavy item right in the cart.  You might want to check whether there's one sitting there that you didn't notice.  I wasn't aware of it at first until an employee pointed it out.
