I use instacart. Been so long since I've been in a supermarket, I think I've forgotten how to use the self check out...

I don't get a discount for doing the scanning and bagging and I don't want to contribute to job loss, so I use the live cashiers. In addition, I live alone and it's nice to have a short chat while the person is checking me out. It may be my only human contact for days.
I've also noticed that the self-checkouts are not arranged for social distancing, and people seem to forget about it entirely when they're rushing to get out of the store. If you need assistance in self-checkout, what I've observed is the helper coming right up to the customer to help with coupons or whatever. So I also view them as riskier than cashiers, with more germ exposure. Your experience may differ.

On the rare occaisions I go in, I do sometimes use the self checkout. I don't mind if I don't have a shopping basket full of groceries.
When I have been in since the virus, I just try to get what I need and get out, not looking at things I don't need.
Prior to Covid, I would browse a lot and get lots of items I didn't need.

Well I know by observation that shoplifters love them. they easily slip stuff thru without being caught. I use them but something always goes wrong which irritates me.

Since they invented those things I have probably only used about 6 times. Time before last several months ago I got home to see that I had swiped some Maybelline makeup three times for only one stick of foundation. Not worth going back to Walmart to plead for refund. I did do once more since about a month ago and did it correctly. I do not mind standing in a line even for quite awhile. Prefer to be waited on by a live persen when I can since I have to wait on myself all day every day at home.

you notice now walmart even has those robots with the banner on them saying "I'm working please don't touch me". Everything is going automated.
They don't want to hire people and pay them wages and benefits, so, here comes the self checkouts. They force you to use them because they only man 2 lanes out of 15. Somebody always has 2-300.00 worth of stuff ahead of you, plus, a screaming kid . So, you make a bee line to the self checkout where the monitor gal watches you like a hawk
Hard to use coupons in self checkout mine are always declined, so, that's a hassle "CSM, CSM"!!!! she has to put in her credentials, do a override, on and on like that. They want to make stuff go easier, but, all they have done is make it harder.
I got into it one day with a worker and was gonna turn her in to the manager over those **** 6 ft. carts that they use for the people who shop online. I"m not getting into a discussion on that in here because I don't need the grief, but, suffice it to say it's good for the elderly and the handicapped, but, that should be the extent of it.
shopping at walmart is getting to be like running thru a gauntlet. LOL
