Re: Do you have one of these electric fireplaces?

@songbird

That's very pretty but I was asking about an electric fireplace.  As I mentioned last week when we were looking at propane fireplaces, there are on  natural gas lines out in the country where we live.

We haven't discussed putting a mantle above it but hummmm.  I was thinking more like 3' from the bottom of the fireplace.

Our electric coop around here is some of the lowest rates in the state.  We have a heatpump so that also helps with the electric bill.  The heater on this electric fireplace won't get used much  It is mostly for ambiance and like another said, it will be the first thing people see when they enter thru the front door and step out of the entry.  We don't have access to natural gas in the boonies.

@Desertdi

We aren't talking about the stone fireplace in the den anymore. Gave up on that when we found out you could not adjust the flame on propane and we have no natural gas lines out here.  So I went to plan B to put an electric one in my bathroom. After I got the 36" electric one, I thought hey, let's put it in the dining room instead.  It will get more use and more "views".  So we're sending it back and getting a 42" of the same model.

Here is a lower installed one but I'm thinking 36.  This is DH's field so I'll let him decide.

Thanks @Coastalcarolina

We both like the idea of this in the dining room vs my bathroom.  It will get more use there.

@Kachina624

eh, semi formal.  It's in the center of the house with a (sitting) bar (not a drinking bar) separating the dining room and the kitchen.  It will get SOOO much more use here vs my bathroom.  We don't eat at the dining room table anymore since my knee surgeries.  The fireplace will be used often minus the heat.  It heats a 400+ sq ftr area.  That will heat the kitchen and dining room.  But we're in Tx and certainly don't need heat that often.  We will be able to view the fireplace from the dining room table, bar and kitchen...the hub of the home.

I would install it at the eye level of the average person seated,  in a dining room.

That's what we're talking about. I mentioned the cardboard mockup to him the other day. We will be doing that as well. This wall backs up to his bathroom, so there will be plumbing to consider. It might miss it; it might not. He says he thinks it will only mess with the vent stack. We'll have to call our plumber to reroute it since DH is not a & @%$*I # plumber (his words, NOT mine, lol).  You're so smart Smiley Wink

Re: Do you have one of these electric fireplaces?

DH likes "real" and our Cowboy chic den definitely called for an Austin Copped stone fireplace and hearth and a live edge oak mantel.  It was plumbed for propane for "one day".  He felt the time had come but after spending the day looking, we decided it's not something we could do for various reasons and no natural gas lines in the country.  The propane one would have been a click of the remote too.

The electric fireplace is beautiful and I'm excited that I thought of moving it to the dining room and that DH was on board with the idea too.

I would never consider an electric fireplace. Electricity bill is too high already and besides, natural gas is cheaper around here.

@SilleeMeeelectricity around here is farily cheap.  As it is, DH doesn't complain at all about the 1500 W heater I have running in the Greenhouse.  I have it on a thermostat, so it doesn't run all the time, only when it gets below 50 deg.  Same wattage for that lamp heater in my pic.  They make a big deal in the presentation about it being the maximum amount of wattage allowed, but most any space heater with a fan uses the same amount of wattage.

DH and I would both love to have gas, but we're also not paying for all the neighbors to have access to it which is what it would take.  You pay by the foot, and I'm sure as soon as they ran the line, many would hook in, but that would be AFTER we paid for the main line to be run.  That's exactly what happened when someone built a house on the corner lot nearby.  They paid to have gas run to them, and then all those neighbors started hooking into it.  That was the first time we even knew there was gas that close.  It's from the neighboring city since our town wouldn't run a line up the big hill we live on.  We're really close to the city line, but they have no problem running it through the county and into our city.

Even so, I would still have to run an electric heater for the greenhouse.  I couldn't imagine trying to run a gas line to it.  As it is, I have to use a heavy duty outdoor-rated extension cord for my greenhouse power and I have the thermostat set to turn power off to the fan when the heater comes on to make sure I don't pop the breaker.  I now have a fan with battery backup, so it now continues to run.  Sorta threw me the first time I was in there and they were both running.

Yes, we will do all that.  I've returned the 36" (never opened it) and ordered this 42"  It should be here on Jan 5, maybe earlier. Polar Vortex is supposed to hit Jan 11.  Should be no prob for DH to have it installed by Jan 11.  I'm excited!  It will be the cherry on the cake for our dining room Smiley Happy
