Re: Do you give tips to workmen?

Absolutely not.  I'd pay the bill promptly; that's all.

I agree with others that the idea of tipping has gotten way out of control.  This is a job for which you were quoted a price.  That's the end of it.

Re: Do you give tips to workmen?

I don't tip plumbers, electricians, builders, delivery people doing building supplies, etc.  I think all expected tipping should go away, and find it now annoying to tip for service like food.  I feel this whole system is outdated and unnecessary.

I would give a bonus to someone for outstanding work done with extra care, but just for doing a job?  Naw. It has outlived its usefulness.

Re: Do you give tips to workmen?

It depends on the situation. I had a clogged drain yesterday & called our plumber at 8 am & he was there at 9 when it’s ok to work in our condo building. I tipped him as he was so responsive & he has a daughter in Vet School & son in medical school. He was appreciative. We also tipped him when we had our bathroom renovated as I did to the tile man working for our contractor.

If you feel he did a good job (getting up on any ladder is not my thing) and you feel it is warranted, by all means tip him. An extra $20 is not going to hurt you financial. It will also keep him coming back as someone else had stated.

Besides restaurant and hospitality staff, we tip the furniture delivery guys, the guys that delivered and hooked up our washer and dryer, the crew that busted their butts putting on our new metal roof and the young girl that helps me with my gardening/weeding.  Absolutely nothing wrong with showing your appreciation for another's work.

I never tip the owner of a company, for example my HVAC guy.

I did one time to help them get a mattress through a doorway.

I tip someone who comes out when they do the "little extra" that is really not considered part of the job.

If they are working up a sweat or it’s a particularly hot day I would certainly offer them something to drink.

Re: Do you give tips to workmen?

I’m also sure the “tip” is built into the price. Unless they go out of their way to do something I would tip. I went to an auto parts store and needed a rear brake light and front headlight. I asked if he could install them and I did give him some money. They sold parts and I don’t think they install parts.
