For household staples and beauty/ personal items I buy when on a really good sale, but I have learned not to buy "deep"- usually just one and not more than two of an item. I am not a fan of "stockpiling". I plan my weekly menu based on what's on sale.
For a large purchase, like your fridge, I start shopping for a deal on what I want as soon as I need to. Shopped for over a year until I found exactly the pre-owned car I wanted at the price I wanted to pay. Also played one store against another for the best deal on a dishwasher.
Sometimes we are just not that lucky. My fridge quit with no warning. So did my HVAC: no A/C on the hottest week of the year. I still shopped around for those big ticket items, but had to do so quickly.
I do not buy anything just because it's on sale at a great price. I need to have a use and a place for it NOW, or I don't bite. Not tempted. Been there, done that. Too much wasted money and clutter.

both LOL
We know our water heater is on it's last gallons. We bought a new one last weekend. Just waiting for it to die before we put it in, sadly not on sale.
I did buy a new mattress pad from HSN last week, great price. I won't use it until current one really, really needs replacing.
In my world the hot water heater would die on Christmas Eve and we would pay double time and a half to get it installed!!!
That is the luck we have. LOL
A family member bought a new home and it had an old refrigerator, on it's last legs and I kept telling her to replace it before it's too late and she kept laughing it off.......they went on an Alaskan land/sea 2-week trip, of COURSE, it broke down then.
She was not laughing when she came home to a smelly wet mess! It ruined her new HW floors. She swears it stopped working when they pulled out of the driveway.

Some of my big appliances, for instance my washer/dryer, are getting old. But I'll wait until they die before I buy another set. Sales on those kinds of things are always going on so no worries about that.
I stock up on dry goods and toiletries when those go on sale...I usually get enough to last until the next big sale rolls around.

@AbrowneyegirlIf I don't need something, or I can't store something for future use (like freezing a steak or bagels), it ain't a good deal no matter what the price.

I buy things when I see a deal, however I don't buy major appliances before the need arises.

I do both. I really prefer getting something at a good price so I will research and wait until the item is at a price I'm willing to pay. Of course if something dies such as our Water Heater one Saturday morning - you have to do what you have to do.

I used to buy when I saw a good price. And I ended up with closets and spare rooms filled with lots of stuff.
When I retired I had to rethink my future. I did not need so much of the clothing. So I did a huge purge of one closet. The donation place was thrilled when they saw me. I filled the car up 3 times.
So now I don't care how great the deal is. If I end up just donating it, my purchase was not a great deal, no matter the price. I am only going to buy if I really need it. And there isn't much that I need.

With anything else, I want the best I can afford, but I have splurged when it's something I just can't live without. My husband says, "that's debatable".LOL
I was just thinking today that no matter what new and different lipsticks i try, the IT line is just my favorite colors and most long-lasting and moisturizing.

I will buy something if I know I need it and the price is right,,but am not a hoarder and don’t keep very big stashes of anything...simply no room for that and it really isn't necessary. I just like to keep one spare of something like shampoo, etc. I wish I had stocked up on the lipstick L'Oreal discontinued that I wore for many years. Haven't found one yet that even compares. I replace appliances when I can tell their days are numbered...and start watching for deals. Since retiring, clothing is just not a big concern like it was when working...I need little. I use my former work clothes for church and other times when I am "going out".... my jeans and casual tops are what I live in...got rid of lots of clothes when retiring and still keep a bag open to toss things in I am tired of.
