Re: Do you admit when you're wrong?

[ Edited ]

I strongly believe that people that have a hard time admitting they are wrong do a huge disservice to themselves. Everyone makes mistakes and/or is wrong from time to time.

If you cannot admit when you're wrong, you cannot learn from your mistakes and grow.

If you believe you're never wrong, you won't feel the need to seek knowledge and learning to improve and become wiser. I truly believe that learning never ends; there never comes a time IMO when we know everything about anything.

Therefore, this type of mindset leads to stagnation as well as resentment from those that you wrong yet cannot apologize to.

Being able to admit when you're wrong takes courage and humility. I consider it an act of kindness to yourself and to others. It allows self-actualization and for the betterment of society.

It also may avoid negative consequences if the mistake is admitted on a timely basis. Pride, ego and saving face I'm certain can be attributed to many tragedies. Hubris is not a good adviser.

As a reasonable person, I have no problem admitting when I'm wrong when presented with a good argument to the contrary. I'd rather be wrong about how to approach a problem etc. and stand corrected than to keep moving in the wrong direction.

However, as a researcher, I can admit when I don't know enough about a subject but I find that many people simply have a hard time doing so.

I can't answer that - it's never happened

Are you a person who immediately admits that you were wrong or do you find it hard to do?  I know someone who will swear up and down one thing, but when proven wrong she will never say she was wrong.  It's some sort of pride thing, I guess.

What do you all think?

You putting the word "immediately" into your question seems misplaced to me. If someone knows "immediately" that they were wrong? I see them as lying, not wrong.

Been wrong about lots of things, but some took quite some time to prove to myself, I was indeed wrong. Sure, I will admit when I am wrong, but many times being wrong does not necessarily mean another person was involved.

I tell myself, "hey man, you missed that one", and try to be right the next time. Spent a lot of time in my 30+ years as an on ice hockey referee saying: "my fault, I blew that call". Have no problem admitting that I was/am wrong.

Re: Do you admit when you're wrong?

Generally I have no problem admitting I was wrong if I feel that I was. My mom was one of those people who would never admit to being wrong. Maybe she never felt she was-Smiley Happy I can be stubborn depending on the situation, but I will usually speak up and say I was wrong if I was.

I have no trouble at all admitting I'm wrong.  It happened once, in 1974.

Re: Do you admit when you're wrong?

I do.  And I think things would go much more smoothly if more people would.  It's not like it's fun to be wrong and to admit that you are.  But I really can't not do it and feel good about myself.

I have several people in my family and several people as friends (well, at least I did), who refuse(d) to admit they are wrong.  They will not say so and will not apologize no matter what and no matter what evidence is presented to them.  They also do not seem to care how much they upset you by it.

I think this shows lack of regard for other people and that you don't feel other people are as intelligent as you are.

I gave up trying to make my point with any of the people mentioned above because I found that I got no where and ended up beyond frustrated and upset.  It's like --- o.k. - you're right, you're right -- you'll always be right no matter what.  Are you happy now??? Woman Frustrated

Yep, I do.  I will never admit to wrong, however, if I think I am right.  To me that is lying.

My dear departed Dad used to say "I thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken"

truthfully yes, I admit it.
