Do You know what Apocalypse really means?

I didnt and just found out.Just curious how many others thought it was a awful thing that could happen.

An apocalypse (Ancient Greekἀποκάλυψις apokálypsis, from ἀπό and καλύπτω, literally meaning "an uncovering") is a disclosure of knowledge or revelation. In religious contexts it is usually a disclosure of something hidden, "a vision of heavenly secrets that can make sense of earthly realities".[1

Re: Do You know what Apocalypse really means?

That is very interesting and much more encouraging!

I wonder when it became something ominous.

Maybe from the movie versions or something.

I guess it has more than one meaning because I Googled it and this is the first thing that came up:

a·poc·a·lypse

noun

  1. 1.
the complete final destruction of the world, especially as described in the biblical book of Revelation.

  2. 2.
an event involving destruction or damage on an awesome or catastrophic scale.

What I found interesting is if you put the word "An" in front of Apocalypse the meaning changes.

Re: Do You know what Apocalypse really means?

I did know this as it applies to the book of Revelations, and was the first application that I had learned/heard the word used as a child.

It always seemed to me, that we changed the word over time to remove it from that context. Yes, destruction, but with the disclosure of something good at the end.

@Sparky3333

Makes a lot of sense.

I need to look up how it changes based on putting “an” in front.

All I know is that the religious preachers are always wishing for the end... the coming.... like it is a good thing to have this revelation. Not my cup of tea thankyou very much.

Have to be careful with google and other modern query systems since they many times, lose the original translations because they try to "update" the info. I'd go with the Greek here, especially if you are refering to the book of Revelation. Things that were hidden will be revealed. With new knowledge, there will be a choice to make, given the new knowldege. Then the old passes away...you cab choose to pass away with it, or move into the something new. I'm sure caterpillars mourn the loss of their cocoon, until they realize:"Hey! I can fly now!"

Of course, if you are refering to "The Walking Dead", then I'd use the Google version 😂😂😂

Well, I may get flamed for this, but there are people who want to control, and one way of doing it is by frightening us. Control the language, control the people. (Or the thoughts of the people.)

Think of all the words we grew up using innocently, that we can't use anymore. They've been "appropriated" for other meanings, other agendas. I can't even put them down here. Phrases we used to use regularly are now considered "hate speech", because the meaning has been changed.

Anyway, I learned about this word, Apocalypse, recently, and it makes sense.  I, for one, am more afraid of spiders than the coming changes. Will be interesting.

It seems to be running rampant these days, "Vote for me, or you'll lose your health care, free food, free housing, free this, that, the other". <<Sorry if that's considered political, mods, just delete the paragraph. It was to help make the point.

Some of the words and phrases that are no longer acceptable is because they were always a form of hate speech or denigration of ethnicities or lifestyles.

You may have thought the words were innocent, but they never were.
