Drivers are probably still doing all of the above and just added texting to it.

I had a kid at the grocery store almost walk into me because he couldn't look up. I saw him coming and just stood there until he was maybe 1 step from walking into my cart.

@Meowingkitty    I just got back from Walmart.  There was a woman there with a little kid who was less than a year old in the cart.  He was gripping a cell phone and looked like he was in a trance.  I guess the cell phone addiction starts young.

A few years ago the Aston Martin from James Bond's "Goldfinger" was up for sale.  I really don't follow the Bond films, but as a young boy of 11, the car fascinated me.  It  featured headlights that dropped down when you pushed a button to activate machine guns, and the parking lights released a couple of heat seeking missiles.

I was sadly disappointed to realize that (of course!) those features were simply movie prop fiction, but it stll doesn't keep me from grabbing my parking brake handle to drop the headlights when I am cut off, or behind one of these texting bozos at a light.

As far as walking and not watching where you are going because of looking down at your phone, I found the same trend while traveling to Scotland so it definetely is not just here.  My daughter did the driving and it was minimal so I didn't notice about the driving.

In October 2022 we were driving northbound on Route 77 just outside Troutman, NC in our 40 ft long, 15 ft high motorhome. We were in the lefthand lane of the 3 lane northbound side of the highway, a woman on the entrance ramp did not see us, I looked down and saw her phone in her hand, told my husband to hang on because she was going to hit us, he had nowhere to go and she was already right beside me at the front of the motorhome. Long story short, she demolished our motorhome, she hit us in front of the front tire through the entire passenger side of the vehicle. We were not hurt, she was shook up but not injured, she did over $75,000 worth of damage. Distracted driving.

  I agree with all the above, about people so addicted to their cell phones, that they cannot even put them down while driving.

  I retired two weeks before everything shut down when Covid

hit. After looking forward to travel and all the other things I worked for, for 32 years, these last three years have been very

disappointing.

 I have become so accustomed to staying in my house, that I now have little desire to venture outdoors, except to my porch.

 Driving is not a pleasure. If drivers are not on their phones, they

drive aggressively, speeding and cutting people off. I do try

to avoid the highways, because they are driving like maniacs

at high speeds. Even people not driving are angry and intolerant. It's just not worth the stress to go out.

  Medical appointments and picking up prescriptions are usually the times I venture out. On rare occasions, I eat out at

a restaurant.

  Anything I need, can be bought online, with most of my shopping from Macy's or Etsy.

  The supermarket delivers my groceries. If someone told me four years ago, that I would be living such a reclusive life, I

would not have believed them; but here I am.

That's not new here.  It's been going on since cell phones came on the scene.

@We rescue cats   I am so sorry that happened to you. To be in that position, knowing what is about to happen and to not be able to do anything to prevent it. How frightening! All because of some ignorant moron. People are acting as if they have no sense; pure stupidity.

   I don't wear tee shirts, but in catalogs I see a lot of funny ones.

The other day I saw this on a tee shirt: "The world is made up of

protons, neutrons, electrons and morons."

Traffic cameras to catch texters.  I love this idea.  Wish it was country-wide. 

Obviously it's a danger as I see roadside message boards in many states that say to PUT DOWN THE PHONE.  Or DON'T TEXT AND DRIVE.  Some even print the last words a texter sends before their demise. Yes, I've seen that on billboards along highways.  Very telling how dangerous it is.  

When people are texting and driving, they are looking down, using both hands to text.  Now if they only hit other people who were texting, well, I guess that would be fair.

Because they're being conditioned to find everything scary, it's a useful tactic. What I find so scary is what some people are capable of because of that ingrained fear.
