@SilleeMee wrote:Land developers are offering to buy victims' properties already! Outrage!
@SilleeMee I have read that Gov. Green is working with the AG to set up a moratorium and banning of any land purchases.
It doesn't surprise me - the cruelty and greed. Some folks probably still have mortgages and I'm sure have lost jobs.
Nevermind giving the residents "low interest loans". We need to stop forgiving other debt and direct those funds to all victims of this epic tragedy.

@SilleeMee I hope the locals run them out of town. Just pathetic.

The news is stating 106 people have died and 1300 are still missing. They are collecting DNA to see if they can match the bodies. Dogs are helping in the search.
I heard on the news that the power company seems to be the point of contention. I guess it is a wait and see outcome. My heart goes out to all who have lost everything.
$700.00 for each family in Hawaii is like a drop in the bucket. We are offering so little help to these people that have suffered.

My comment about the money was deleted but you are correct $700.00 is nothing.

The $700 from FEMA is just the START of aid to victims to buy essentials to live. Many have lost everything and only have the clothes on their bodies. There are many other benefits that can be applied for to assist with housing & rebuilding.
Please, could everyone try to find out all the information before reacting to snippets of information? This just spreads lots of misunderstanding, misinformation, and results in riled emotions.
No organization or government is perfect, mistakes will be made. They ARE really trying to help people as best as they can right now. The public is not always privy to why something is done a certain way. For instance: Not letting anyone enter Lahaina town yet, while searching for the deceased, is logical for safety & psychological reasons.

Hawaiian Electric has contacted several Wall Street restructuring firms in the face of lawsuits and declining stock price.
In a similar situation Pacific Gas and Electric years earlier filed Chapter 11, eventually settling liabilities at far less than plaintiffs were seeking.

Hi @SilleeMee
Amen to the! Outrage! It's despicable!!
Under Normal Circumstances, I thought those who bought land in Hawaii, had to have a certain minimum % authentic Hawaiian Ancestry, or Hawaiian Blood, in order for any one to buy land in Hawaii. That is, under normal circumstances; I loved that idea!
Horrible Tragedies like such, It's amazing to me how the ppl/businesses with ill intent try to capitalize, &/or take cruel, selfish advantage of those in need, & in awful circumstances.
Is more than a Bummer. Such scamming, selfishness is outrageous!!
Maybe we can forestall such ill intentioned "gimme's" by abundantly giving to REPUTABLE organizations that can abundantly give to the needs of those horribly affected by such awful circumstances, as Maui.
Unless I hear otherwise, I feel safer giving to RedCross.org They ALWAYS seem to be the first on the scene in event of horrid circumstances ppl find themselves in.
The Head of RedCross.org (make sure the REAL authorized organization) has also come on TV looking for Volunteers for Maui, even for only in 3-4 week stints.
José Andrés, World Central Kitchen (WCK) (make sure the REAL authorized charity) I trust to donate too also. Altho I havent seen him there yet, on News. I trust,, if possible, he always seems to be on scene of catastrophes

Oprah Winfrey is likely the largest private landowner on Maui.

I'm sad that the media is again trying to use this to stir up division. I saw saw an NBC report on my news feed that a tourist (whom they named) had United Airlaines Mileage plus priority which he used to get his family on a plane out of Maui. The article goes on about how "others who were less fortunate" couldn't do this and implied that his selfishness hurt others.
WTH. Tell me if you had this priority - wouldn't you use it to get your family out - or would you go to the airport and offer these seats to the "less fortunate?" Seriously? Like I'm sure these NBC execs who are being paid millions would have made their family wait until everyone else who wanted to leave got to do so.

The Albertson's family of supermarkets (there are many) will match up to $100,000 in donations.
I think they should raise that, but glad that they're doing it.
Are there any other companies doing match donations?
