We have two Dillard's stores here in malls and one of the stores is a Clearance Center which isn't open a lot of the time. Probably won't be long for both to close.

@SilleeMee , same here in my town, do we live in the same town, LOL  ......  just kidding!  I like Dillards, but they just never have any good sales, only clearance stuff!  I much prefer Belk's in my town, always have good sales and extra coupons to save more!

I worked at Hecht's in the '90s.  It was a regional department store, owned by the May Company at the time.  Strawbridges was another affiliate.

Even then, department stores were perilously close to being dinosaurs.  We are talking the 1990s.  I worked my tail off for $6.35/hour, until I worked even crappier hours as a management trainee for a whopping $8.05/hr.

Hechts became Macy's.  I was long gone by the time that happened.

None of this is really a new trend - of course, there are current influences but there are a whole host of reasons these stores fail.

I live in Ohio. I used to love Higbees which later became Dillards.  Remember Higbee's Daisy Sales?  Those were like the highlight of the year.  LOL

The Dillards in the mall closest to me closed years and years ago.  I was really upset when they closed because I loved some of their clothing.  We were also one of the very few malls that had 4 anchor stores.  When Dillards closed that left us with 3.  That mall now as 1 anchor store and I'm not sure how it stays open.  I'm not sure how the mall in general stays open.

There is still a Dillards at Great Northern Mall in North Olmsted, Ohio and at SouthPark Mall in Strongsville, Ohio. Those are the 2 malls I now shop at if I'm going mall shopping.  I've not heard anything about the Dillards there closing however, after my last trip inside a Dillards, I haven't been inclined to go back.  The merchandise just didn't interest me anymore and the prices were too high.

We had a huge mall close a few years ago. Now we're having another huge mall close. This is because so many people shop online and the mall stores just aren't making enough money to stay open.

It's a shame because like many of you I enjoy going to the mall with my daughter and Mom.

I've always loved Dillards. They have very nice items and their customer service is great. They're a huge store but they're just not getting enough customers.

I'm guilty of doing most of my shopping online these days. It's just so much easier. Still, I hate to see malls closing.

y@bootsanne   My sister and I went to Century III mall when it was a fabulous mall in the early 80’s. Bus trips from all states near and also from Canada.  It was mainly due to no sales tax on clothes in PA.    It finally closed last month and was down to just a couple stores.  So sad.  We lost Gimbels, Joseph Horne’s (bought by Lazarus, then sold to Macy’s).  Then Kaufman’s then sold to Macy’s.  The “department”  stores will all be gone soon.  As kids, these all seemed so high end. We dressed up to go “downtown”. Hats, gloves dresses (raised in the 60’s).  I miss those department stores so much.  It really was special to shop at these stores. Some were in malls, most Kaufman’s were stand alone stores before going into malls.  Kind of sad.

They have been having financial problems for years...They just built a new freestanding Dillard’s in a newly developing are north of where we live. I think the ones closing are probably in malls....so many malls are closing that the anchor stores are the last ones to go. I loved Dillard’s when it was easy to get to one...they have all closed near me...one of the few classic department stores where you can buy dresses..

Ive always wanted to work in a Departmet Store. It seems glamorous to me, surrounded by fashion and merchandise and a generous employee discount!  But in talking to my regular associate at Kohls she says things have changed for the worse in the last decade. Pressures to sell the store credit cards, customers trashing the store , having to stay late to clean it up and managers that are micro managing.  So maybe its best I stay retired.

Don't live in a state that has Dillards.  Parents had condo in Florida for years.  I'd bring an extra tote bag to pack my shopping sprees.  Loved Dillards.

I ❤️ Dillard’s! We don’t have Dillard’s in HI, so every time we go home to visit, it’s the first store I hit!

Our town lost several BonTon/Younkers/Carsons and Sears closed their stores too.  We had several in town.  I didn't go to Sears but I did like Younkers.

We have a Dillards here...I wonder if it'll last.  Hardly anyone is there when I shop.  This store is always a mess, not as well taken care of as many others I've been to.
