I stayed within about 50 miles from where I was born, went to school, married and have lived here for 48 years.
I used to love Virginia. With the changes I've seen it's no longer my favorite place. None of the changes were for the better.
I live in what used to be rural Virginia. But the city people moved here and people from other states because it's so close to DC that the dynamics has changed....not for the better.
We used to love our two lane country roads. The trees that lined the roads, the schools where everyone knew each other.
That no longer exists. My community is where many people don't know each other.
I know that's true of many places in the US.
My late husband's family goes to the Jamestown settlers. He lived a short time traveling with his Dad but always came back to Va; so he was here to stay.
If I was younger I'd live in Colorado. I'd buy my youngest daughter a house (she's single, no children) and live in a house separate on the land.
I know how to build houses as my late husband taught me (he was a builder among other things).
But it takes stamina and hiring the right people. I can't even find good people to repair things on my house now.
I told my youngest daughter (who's never been married), I wish she'd marry and handyman like her Dad was. My husband fixed everything. He even put new heating elements in my dryer and in my hot water heater. He worked on all of our cars (there were 6 of them).
I told him that I get asked by other's how he learned to do so many things. He'd laugh and say the main reason is I'm not afraid to try it and if I can't do it I'll go to the library and look in a book (that was when personal computers were just coming out).
Anyway, I'll be here til I die. My girls have been helping me reorganize my house (I've given away 12 full trash bags full of clothes and I'm not nearly finished. It's hard to do because some were never even worn. I know some of you ....same thing.
