ETA- I used to get SO ANGRY with Dr.'s , nurses,Police officers, EMTS and even Sean( GOD rest his soul) for making "callous" jokes...

Sean- finally said.. " don't you understand? THIS is how some of us deal with the tragedy we see day in and day out...It keeps us from throwing ourselves off a building"...

I think there is a difference between one finding the humor (and expressing it) about one's own medical condition vs. those people who have to watch their loved ones suffering and not finding it humorous.

VERY good point. Your post made me go read the OP again.

Upon reading it again, it does seem to me that the joke was on the family. Not the sick or disabled. It was a play on words for "depends". It wasn't making fun of people who need the product.

I can see how some people dealing with this issue could take it the wrong way. But if you really read it, it's not against the patient.

Respectfully submitted. Smile

How many people have laughed at "Help! I've fallen and I can't get up!" or have made a humorous reference to that?

It's not like anyone is actually saying "oh haha, goodie, old people falling down and injuring themselves!"

I'm not faulting someone if they DON'T find that funny either.

I "get" that but this is a PUBLIC board... and all of us have 'tragedies, traumas,etc"...we are sensitive to ...

ITA, had little to do with the "patient in depends"...

I read this last night and decided to sleep on it before I responded...

Either way, the O.P clearly meant no harm....

ETA- there is another thread with a debate about "motorcycles" that I REFUSE to respond to because I am still VERY HYPER sensitive over Sean's death ....

I understand your point and agree with it, but also that of EMT.

When people like EMTs or other health professionals deal with the horror of life all the time, making side jokes is a way of relieving stress.

It's been called black humor:

BLACK HUMOR

: humor marked by the use of usu. morbid, ironic, grotesquely comic episodes

Thank you, Noel...{#emotions_dlg.wub}

I NEVER made the jokes and had many arguments about them but I finally understand it...

I'm not disagreeing with EMT's point. It is perfectly understandable when a person has a serious condition that the best way to cope is to find the humor in it.

I was trying to point out that that is different from the posters here who are saddened and/or offended by the OP because they are caring for loved ones who have incontinence as a result of a serious or debilitating disease or condition. It is difficult as a caregiver to handle a loved one who has incontinence and it is just difficult to watch a loved one suffer with incontinence, so they will not find the humor regarding incontinence. They are not joking about themselves. That's all.
