How many people have laughed at "Help! I've fallen and I can't get up!" or have made a humorous reference to that?

It's not like anyone is actually saying "oh haha, goodie, old people falling down and injuring themselves!"

I'm not faulting someone if they DON'T find that funny either.

When my mother was elderly and living alone, she fell and couldn't get up. It was a real horror story. She couldn't get to the phone and nobody (including me) called her that day because we had no idea there was any trouble. This was at the exact time that the "I've fallen" ad first appeared and everyone at work was joking. I sure wasn't laughing!

I had a 14 year old Irish Setter who was incontinent... I would by depends and cut out a place for his tail.. and he wore them all the time. It looked funny, but they were a life saver for me and cleaning up after him. I loved that dog!

Aww!!! That is wonderful that you cared for him in such a way. Some people choose to euthanize their dogs over incontinence issues. If I had a dog, and the only problem was incontinence, I would get him/her Depends too!! It's just incontinence, the loved one--human or non-human--is still your loved one, incontinence or not.

Someone will always come back and say they are offended or insulted because their third cousin twice removed has some sort of a issue. These people must be lots of fun to be around. Why must a simple little joke be taken oh so seriously? When did we loose our sense of humor?

I get what you're saying.

Personally, I come from a family of people who rely on humor to get by day-to-day. Our brand of humor is downright odd--and sometimes offensive--to others...but it helps us get through times of crisis.

However, I think some people are unable to find the humor in things at times, for various reasons. Sometimes, on my worst days, I am not able to find the humor in certain things either.

I don't think you're a monster for finding it funny, I find stuff like that funny too...but I do find it less funny than I used to, because I know my parents don't really feel good about having to use those products. When I see the products in my parents' home, I don't laugh. But if somebody makes a joke on a BB about Depends, I don't find it offensive, and I may laugh. I hope that I will be able to deal with the situation with laughter when I need the products myself.

I guess I just don't see this as funny, as I have a family member with MS that needs to use what she can to be as independent as possible--including items like this.

She hates, absolutely hates, that people think she is different, or looks funny or doesn't walk well…..hates it. And that hurts.

It is funny and you are a just an old stick in the mud.{#emotions_dlg.rolleyes}

My hope is that you get to experience incontinence and loss of body functions so you can join in on the fun that you feel Maryanne's sister is experiencing.

I did not find the original post offensive, but I could see how others could be sensitive to it.

Just because others deal with things by joking about it doesn't mean everyone has to. I don't think they should be told to lighten up. I also do not think people should be wishing horrible things happen to the OP so she can see what it feels like. Yikes.

you wishing ill against another is far worse than someone laughing at a joke that is offensive. Joan rivers would be dead by now if you had your way.
