Re: Days of the Drive In Movie

@nwbabs  Our drive-in was the Natick drive-in.  It was in existence from about 1951 through 1973.

I think there is still a drive-in in Mendon but the price of land in greater Boston has killed almost all of the drive-ins around here.

Re: Days of the Drive In Movie

This is a great thread.  Our drive-in looked just like the photo.  We had the swings and even a little train going around a track to ride on.  There were chairs made of wood that people could sit on up front near the screen and watch the movie.

I was very young (I think maybe 4 or 5) when my folks took us to the drive-in.  We played on the swings etc. in our PJ's and then would fall asleep before the main movie came on. Well, unfortunately, the movie one time was Hitchcock's "Psycho".  Mom and dad counted on us being asleep before it started.  Not me this time.  I was wide awake and so they had me sit up front with them.  When the stabbing in the shower scene came on my mom moved so fast to cover my eyes that she accidentally hit me in the nose.  For years they used to say we had more blood in the car than on the screen.

Life was much simpler in those days I guess!

@Beammeupscotty I am glad you could laugh about your bloody nose and overlook the shower scene. I watched "The Creature of the Black Lagoon." I hid my head through a lot of it. I do not like to be frightened by a movie to this date.

@qualitygal

Well apparently "passion" was on the mind of the first boy who asked me to a drive in movie!  I made it very clear to him on the phone that my answer was based on 2 friends going to see a movie; this was not a boyfriend/girlfriend situation.  I gave him no hope for anything between us other than conversation, refreshments and a movie.

He said he understood, but clearly he didn't.  He picked me up about 7:45, by 8:45 I'd already slapped him and didn't even have to ask to be taken home!  I'm not sure his car came to a complete stop at my house around 9:30, but between me slamming the car door and him spinning gravel, my parents and brothers were at the front door by the time I stepped on the porch.  Mom and Dad had a puzzled look on their face, and my brother took one look at me and asked if I slugged him!

Re: Days of the Drive In Movie

Wow such good memories! When our parents said to put our P.J.'s for the Drive In we ran and to put them on. Once there they would go to the snack bar and get us pizza, burgers, popcorn, sodas and if we were really good an ice cream at the intermission. All 4 of us kids in the backseat trying to see the screen from the old Ford Fairlane. I never slept better than when I fell asleep in the car and to this day I will occasionally have a taste of pizza that takes me back to those good ole days! How I wish we still lived in that carefree world....remember the S&H green stamps that you licked and put in the books and the parents could trade in them for dishes? I loved getting the grown up duty of putting the stamps in the book. I made sure they were perfectly placed in the little squares. Man those were the days!

Re: Days of the Drive In Movie

After covid and all it is surprising in some ways that the family drive in as not made a come back.  I would love to take my grand childfen to the drive in.  Of course they would probably still have their Nintendo Switch games with them!!

Re: Days of the Drive In Movie

[ Edited ]

My parents took the three of us to the drive in frequently! My dad had a 1957 Chevy. He was an auto upholsterer and made a padded platform to fit in the back seat that made it like one big space for us to sleep on. Of course, we wore our pajamas. Our drive in had swings, sliding board, seasaw, spring rides and a roundabout. My dad used to take us to the playground rides before the movie started. The playground was right in front of the screen and once the movie started it was closed. We always got food and snacks from the concession store. In 1957, I was 4 years old. I'm the oldest of three. We loved the drive in. Such fun! The best part for us kids was the playground and the food. I can't  remember ever seeing a movie. We were always asleep by the time it started. I can still remember my sweet dad carrying me into the house and putting me in my bed!

Then, in 1970, when I was a teenage, my dad finally let me date at 17 years old. My first love took me to the drive in on our first date. That was the last time I remember going to a drive in.

Wonderful times and memories in my life!

Thank you starting this thread @On It ! 🤗
