As anticipated, the hoarding mentality has already kicked in, even for items where it's unnecessary due to misunderstanding, false reports and bad information.   Very sad.

My SIL works for Costo in San Antonio, Texas.  He said they are out of bottled water and people are hoarding all paper products and they are very low.  We are in So. Cal and my husband went to Costco today and they were not anymore crowded than a normal Tuesday.  Hopefully we will not be affected here in the West.

I live about 4 hours from your SIL here in Texas and went to the grocery store after work yesterday.  Toilet paper was already on my list since I am down to only three rolls at home.  The entire aisle was full of all paper products and the next aisle over was fully stocked with water of all sizes.  I only bought my intended usual supply of toilet paper.

I don't know one person who believes a demand for a 77% pay increase for a "walk in off the street" job (zero education or professional training required, is either fair or reasonable in this economy.

@JeanLouiseFinch Longshoremen are not unskilled, off-the-street labor.

  • Physical labor: Longshoremen perform physically demanding work, including moving heavy containers, scaling heights, and operating heavy equipment.

  • Dangerous conditions: Longshoremen work in hazardous conditions and perform dangerous tasks.

  • Integral to the industry: Longshoremen are an essential part of the shipping and receiving industry.

  • Professional trade: Longshoremen are involved in a professional trade with many different elements.

Longshoremen, also known as dockworkers or stevedores, are responsible for loading and unloading cargo from ships at ports and terminals. They work outdoors in all types of weather.

But the strike just started Oct.1....hardly time to affect the products already in the stores!

That is true but some seem to think the shelves are bare already.

@Maizie Green  and others:  many of the big box stores have been sending TP and water and other necessary items to NC, TN and other areas hit by Helene.

I have seen tons and tons of TikToks and people show carts loaded up and huge lines waiting to get out the door at Sam's and Costco.

I didn't go to Costco but went to Aldi (which imports a lot) Trader Joe's, Sam's Club and Walmart yesterday and the stores were unusually busy. I belong to several Aldi FB groups and everyone is complaining their store shelves are empty as were the two I went to yesterday.

another thing to think about...when things opened up during Covid my Hobby Lobby told me even though they were getting stuff to restock, a lot had to be thrown out because it was so moldy after sitting on the cargo ships so long.
