Wouldln't the government taking control of a private labor dispute be considered communism? I guess it's ok if it suits your agenda and you know the definition of democracy, socialism and communism.

EVERYTHING!

Such as? Not oil, Papergoods, or anything else we produce here in the USA and doesn't come in by ship.

@Bhvbum.  I can think of something I'll need that can't be stored, and thats bananas.  I must eat one large one daily for the potassium.  A drug I take depletes potassium so I must get my banana.  Other fruits and veggies contain it but not in sufficient quanity.

With the outrageous demands the dock workers are making, it may be a long and costly strike.

This might be a good time to buy a bottle of a potassium supplement for banana emergencies ... and peace of mind.

I'm not concerned about the dock workers strike, but am concerned about the storm damage in NC and the effect on the trucking industry.

NC has many trucking companies with long haul operations.  Durable goods from the NC manufacturing companies are shipped west, and food from the west is delivered to distribution warehouses in NC.

My daughter delivered product to a distribution warehouse in Asheville that is now underwater.  Everything in that warehouse is contaminated and will be trashed.

Truckers on their way back to NC with deliveries have been stuck in truck stops for days because of not being able to get where they need to go; they can't deliver to the distribution center or get to their employer to drop trailer on their lot for later delivery.  Contamination of the load will be an issue of consideration for trucks that have been thru flooded areas.

Trucks hauling refrigerated loads are on a rigid timeline from when that product is loaded until it is delivered.  Reefer readings must show that load was kept at the specific temperature during transport.  Any reefer load that has been delayed by the hurricane is going to mean lost dollars unless another warehouse will accept it.  We will definitely feel the impact from whatever effects the NC trucking industry!

Many goods from China come into west coast ports.

East coast has some from Asia, many cars, South America goods like produce (bananas!), coffee, some electronics. Of course, some holiday goods.

@bikerbabe

Have you seen anything on how many of the ships coming in will be re-routed to the west coast?

I anticipate that the Long Beach area is going to be a shipping log jam very soon.

With this strike, the devastation from Helene, and the fighting in some parts of the world I would hope the powers that be would consider stepping up and doing their jobs.

The powers that be have been doing their jobs right along if you cared to research or watch the news.  Federal disaster relieve was declared a week ago. There are over 3,500 federal employees have boots on the ground to help with Helena. Calls to Governors in all affected states to ask what more is needed.  Very prompt response.

As stated by a prior poster, can't stop a war in another country but we can help with talks, and helping our allies.

Union problem, union fix.  the Government should not step in right off the bat for such things.  If there is an impasse down the road then the government could offer mediation. But stay out of it for now.

So Yes. The powers that be have already been doing their jobs and doing it well.

Just to ease your fears @Kachina624

There is plenty of potassium in:
  • apricots and dried fruit.
  • tree fruits — such as avocados, apples, oranges and bananas.
  • leafy greens — such as spinach, kale and silverbeet.
  • vine fruits — such as tomatoes, cucumbers, zucchini, eggplant and pumpkin.
  • root vegetables — such as carrots, potatoes and sweet potatoes.

I'm sure you can find something here instead of a banana. Worst case scenario, buy some potassium supplements.

As much infinite, all-knowing, futuristic predictive knowledge espoused here, & on the other thread,  I'm not sure any one can be 150% sure.  So, consider the source, imho.

This affects truckers and them loosing their income source. The crane operators are making $300,000 per year, with a pay increase of 77% over 6 years would put them over $500,000 a year. They are demanding no automation. Also, West Coast got a 32% increase over 6 years.  The unions used to be useful but now they are becoming irrational. With Hurricane Helene destroying many people's lives, this is the last straw. My heart goes out to those that are struggling.

This should have been stopped before it got to this point. It is costing 5 billion per day. Who knows how long this is going to go on and cripple our country.  This will effect construction, chemicals, furniture, clothes and toys.
