Re: Credit Card With a Security Chip Embedded

We got a new Visa card and it has one of these chips - the card is very heavy in comparison to our other cards. It's the only card I carry so it does make me feel safer that it can't be scanned by thieves. No fees - as a matter of fact it is a rewards card.

Re: Credit Card With a Security Chip Embedded

How are the cards processed with the chip in them? They don't swipe them?

Re: Credit Card With a Security Chip Embedded

Is this the RFID technology that QVC sells those wallets to protect so people can't swipe the information?

Sam's Club just replaced their Discover Card with a Master Card issued by Synchrony Bank that has the new embedded chip.

Yep, we just got a new card from Mastercard that has the new chip. No fees and has rewards.

There is a slot in the bottom of the machine that you insert the card into much like inserting it into a ATMS and it reads the embedded chip.

Isn't it the cards with the strips that can be read through wallets? The chip cards are suppose to be safer.

This is from the product page on a Travelon wallet:

Help protect your identity with this innovative RFID-blocking card case. Many new credit cards include an RFID or radio frequency identification chip that broadcasts your personal data using radio frequency; your sensitive information can be captured without your knowledge by an RFID-reading device. This durable card case effectively blocks RFID-reading devices to help keep your personal data safe. From Travelon.

I'm not sure if this is the same though. It drives me nuts when QVC presents these items because they never bother to tell people that unless your card has the RFID chip, the wallet isn't going to help at all.

Sorry. I thought the problem with the strip cards was thieves had devices that could penetrate pockets, wallets and handbags and gather the card holder's information.
