Sam's Club just replaced their Discover Card with a Master Card issued by Synchrony Bank that has the new embedded chip.

I just got a new AMEX card with the chip. It does carry an annual fee, but the benefits that I receive from the card make it more than pay for itself for my situation.

I didn't realize how it worked. The store where I work just received a new CC machine that is enabled to accept either the old style cards or the new cards with the embedded chip. Each time you use the "chip" card you have the option of asking it to be swiped or inserted (new style of running a card). When it's inserted the chip scrambles your info and sends itself a new password to add more security ....complicated to explain, but our understanding is that all stores will be required to have the new machines next year and all cards will be changed over to the chip embedded kind. It's too bad it's taking all these awful security breaches before this country finally starts using the more secure chip-embedded cc's.
All about $$ again. The banks/cc companies didn't want to spend the $$ until now when they're losing huge amounts to the security breaches.
Think of all the headaches and problems that could've been avoided if they'd just started using them earlier, like they should have.

Yes we have the Am Ex, it is an EMV and I do know we have a annual fee but I am not sure exactly how much that is. (I think a couple hundred) I am not a fan of yearly fee but with this card it does pay for itself for the things we use it for. My husband especially.

I was sent an EMV card this summer as a replacement, not sure why. It does not have an annual fee. This week at Toys R Us I noticed the new type of terminal.
I do think that none of the USA cards are PIN enabled however, which may be the issue you will have in other countries.

I just received a new embedded chip Master Card. It had been a Discover Card previously. I activated the card yesterday but have not used it yet.
After having my CC account numbers stolen last year I am hopeful this new card avoids that possibility. If so, I'll be happy.

Canada has had the chip cards for many years. No annual fees.

I had read a story about how all the cc machines in Europe were only using the cards with chip technology and I wanted to have cards that would work. I found the story to be much exaggerated. Every credit card machine I used in stores, restaurants etc. allowed for use of either the chip technology or the card reader for magnetic stripes.
Our cards do not have chips and have never had problems using them in Europe.
