And that is what is causing the shortages and the panic at the pump.
@Shawnie True. And people not only topping off their tanks but filling multiple gas cans at the same time.
I feel for people who truly need the gas to get to work and cannot find any.
Think about a business that uses delivery drivers, too; not only will those employees not be able to do their jobs but customers will not go there in person to conserve their own gas.

The college students are back to school and it is a holiday weekend. Gas prices always go up here this time of year in central NY. On a normal day I can usually travel about 30 miles in any direction and save $.10 per gallon. In a college town everything costs more.

@homedecor1 wrote:So annoying. I usually fill my car (always at 1/2 tank) on Thursday/Friday - should have known that they would be "gouging" in FL (there is no cap I believe like other states where they can only raise a nickel or something).
Wed - gas was $2.19
Thursday - gas was $2.29
Friday -- gas was $2.39
today -
$2.69 regular
$2.99 premium
Ridiculous! I felt sorry for the truck next to me - kept going til $74 ...
I don't feel sorry for him-unless this truck was a business truck for his livelihood, people who buy gas-guzzlers pay the price.
People want inefficient mileage vehicles without a second thought; so be it when prices rise.

Gas is not stored. Those tank farms only hold gas briefly until the time it's moved to it's final destination which is usually wholesale gas terminals. Tank farms are placed at junctions of major and minor pipelines or at locations where it can be loaded on a barge, or a wholesale terminal for truck loading, for example. It's just a holding area, like a parking lot. The product is moving all the time. At the tank farm, the different volumes of product are either sent on it's way on the main pipeline or peeled off to go to feeder lines based on whoever owns the product.
We use so much gas & diesel daily in the US, what is the point of storage? Inventory costs money, you have to move product out to make money.
And whatever product was in "storage" at the time of the hurricane is way gone by now.
The price of gas, just like the price of crude, depends on the market. It's whatever the "market will bear". The product is traded all during the day, just like stocks on the stock market. Prices go up & down all day until it settles on 1 daily price at the end of the day.

Everyone that has lived several decades has experienced the "if only" and/or the "coulda/woulda/ shoulda" phenom, myself included. Even without the ravages of hurricane Harvey, it has been pretty common for gas prices to rise on this particular Holiday weekend.
I don't drive enough to get concerned about gas prices, and this time of year we seldom drive our SUV. We choose our gas miser Yaris 95% of the time. Now home gas and electric? Whole different story. It isn't a form of energy that is generally known by those that consume it. Gas pump prices can be seen coming for those that follow those types of things.

I'd like to Apologize if my post appeared that I didn't have empathy or sympathy for those who are affected by Hurricane Harvey!
In fact, I have done my part to help those who have been affected by this devastation by not only donating to the Red Cross fund but took 10 cases of water to our local fund drive which will be delivered to those in need.
Now to my original post:
This is common in FL (my area) many times in the morning gas is $2.09 by NOON it could be $2.29+ depending on gas station! It's just annoying to me -
Case in point - this morning at 10:30 it was $2.69 & premium was $2.99 just went by same station - prices as of 3:30 pm $2.59 reg / $3.29 premium!!!
Again, I'm if the post seemed like a complaint - it was meant to be a observation of price "gouging".
This truck along side of me was huge xtended cab style - looked more like it was set up for rugged terrain (didnt have any business logo) lots of people down here drive these huge "off road" trucks!
Guess I've been spoiled with my Accord since i gave up my Escalade which used only premium gas and got about 10 mph when gas was $3.89/gal a few years ago!!!

Then why are only some of the gas stations charging $20 per gallon during a disaster and not all of them? It's gouging, period. But does the AG have the time to prosecute them all? $100 for a gallon of water?

And then there's the Hum Vees seen around my city with no actual excuse for being other than to carry groceries home. Anyone know what the gas mileage would be on one of those babies?

It is what it is. There is nothing we can do about it unless we want to give up our cars 🚗!!
Right now my heart ❤️ is with the folks in Texas!! Our inconvenience is minimal compared to them.
