Well, in SoCal the costs are so horrifying that I now "top off" my tank when it gets down to 3/4 full. I tell myself that it isn't so bad when I'm only getting a quarter of a tank at a time.
Last week, my favorite cheap station was $5.95. Today, that same station was $6.31.
And it's supposed to be getting up to 95-100 degrees the next few days. I'm going to stay home and read.
That is the exact reason why I fill up once a week when I get down to 1/2 a tank of gas. It's to stop me from having cardiac arrest, if I was ever on empty and had to fill it up.
My boss has been driving one of his kids cars a Honda Accord, versus the big suburban that he normally drives. He is also a firm believer in waiting until the light comes on before getting gas. He went to fill up the other day and the pumps out here automatically shut off at 100.00 dollars. The pump shut off.
Nope!! I just cannot see that price. Let me bury my head in the sand.
Well, he either has a very short memory or needs to get a neurological checkup. If he waits until his tank is empty, and we are suddenly having another gas shortage, he's going to be in trouble.
I'm sure many here remember when there were long lines for gas and even the days you could get gas were restricted by whether your license plate ended in an even or odd number.
Not for me .... I am going to try to keep my tank as full as possible ... and drive a LOT less.
@Tinkrbl44 - I agree. I have been keeping my tank pretty full. At 3/4 tank or a little less, I fill up. Last year, there was the hacking of the Colonial pipeline and, at least in our city, we went from gas everywhere to absolutely none in the course of an afternoon. I had just filled up that morning and ever since then, and especially now with such uncertain times, I never, ever get down to 1/2 tank before filling up.

Earlier this month we took a trip to Rome, Georgia. It is over 800 miles from our house. My husband said we roughly spent over $400 for gas.

@Boehm Collector I figured by today it would go there.

I just came back from the supermarket and gas is 4.99 to 5.09 in western PA. My mind wandered back to the 1960's when you could fill your tank for $5.00 (gas was around 35 cents a gallon!. PA gas tax is more than that and also the highest in the nation.

I am from Southern California as well and if you don't mind me asking what county are they paying that much for gas? I am in Riverside County. I am guessing perhaps L.A. County?

Yes, LA county. I live in Shasta County.

This will never end. Premium is now $6-7 on average. The highest I've seen is now a whopping $8 per gallon.

i have to go down the mountains a few mile to get to civilization. always make it a productive trip. i save up my errands. yesterday i went to town as i had 5 stops/errands.
i have always done this no matter where i am. never just run out for something.
i didn't jump on the extra freezer bandwagon a couple years ago because i had no issue with finding foods. i was flexible with brands and slight recipe changes.
however, now the prices of gas and food has me convinced i need to purchase a stand alone freezer. my huge side by side fridge is full. last week the grocery had sirloin steaks 4.98 lb reg 7.98 lb. could not buy much as i have no room. this weeks sales are also good london broil, boneless chicken breasts. grrrrrrr
the medium chest freezers are reasonable '(around $500) and cost about $25 a year to run.
i can lessen my trips even more and take deeper advantage of great sales. the freezer will pay for itself in a very short time.
