I can tell you now, having known and taught young people, she can't imagine what you are going through.

Could you feel like what it was to be a parent when you were 12 years old?  That's a far leap.  She has probably lost relatives, but didn't have the maturity to be fully mentally involved.

Re: Conversation At The Dentist

My children too all experienced probably an unusual amount of deaths in close family and close friends. It affected them a lot as it would anyone no matter what the age.

Some are fortunate to not know of many deaths even up thru their middle age.

I don't think we can assume that all young people do not experience it

or understand.

They too will be very aware of those not here not just on holidays but every day.

I'm the OP, I was not soliciting sympathy from her, I am happy she has a loving family she'll sit down to Thanksgiving dinner with. As far as being too young to have experienced loss, I unfortunately dealt with loss at a young age. I feel I have had empathy and have been sympathetic my whole life.

There are still things to enjoy and do, and. it is different, but I'm still here and I'm going to make the most of every minute I can, especially as long as hubby and I are together!  But we have assured one another that someday life will go on single--and we've promised to do the best we can even then.

I can't predict the future, I can't live in the past, but today is a blessing to be savored.

I applaud your fortitude.

@deepwaterdotter Thanks but I don't think it's fortitude, it's simply about the only choice I have.  I can't change the way things are, so it is what it is.

@Kitty Galore I can't take credit for it--the way I look it is as long as I can give thanks to my maker I can go forward.

Re: Conversation At The Dentist

It isn't her fault.  When I was in my 20s' I was only a knuckle head kid alot of times.

Your post made me cry.  I was alone a lot of times but when I was young.  Had a bad marriage, bad relationship after that, I guess you know the drill.

I'm in a good marriage, not a perfect one, now so things are better.  Being alone only bothered me near holidays.  I see a lot of people alone which I never saw years ago.

I'm sorry, hon.  Hoping GOD puts someone good in your life. XXOO

Assuming negative things about young people is a common occurrence here.

Re: Conversation At The Dentist

I have been thinking a lot lately about how differently I reacted to things when I was much younger (I'm 65).  You just have completely diferent life experiences at that age, and for some it's hard to relate and react in an appropriate way.
